Forum Rules

#1 Post by Matt »

New members
Newly registered users will have their first five posts reviewed by moderators before they appear on the forum. These posts must be part of an existing thread and should be meaningful, useful, or helpful to the discussion, including thoughtful comments, news, or good questions. Posts that do not add to the discussion will not be approved and will not count toward the five-post requirement.

Private messaging is turned off during the new user trial period. If you need to contact a moderator, please use the designated thread.

One account per member
Members of this forum are expected to have only one account. If you have been banned previously, do not create a new account to get around the ban. If you are found to have more than one account or have created a new account after being banned, you may be restricted, suspended, banned, or have duplicate accounts deleted.

Read before posting
Take time to read existing discussions and learn about the forum before posting frequently. You do not need to share an opinion in every thread. Those who post excessively may be asked to stop posting like this and may be suspended or even banned if it continues.

Stay on topic
Replies should relate to the subject of the thread. If an off-topic conversation arises out of the current discussion, start a new thread for it or ask a moderator to split the thread. Personal or unrelated responses directed at an individual member should be sent by private message.

Make substantive posts
Avoid “empty” posts that add nothing to the discussion (for example, brief reactions like “That’s awesome!” or "Me too!"). Contribute ideas, information, or questions.

Write clearly
Use standard spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. Avoid text-speak, excessive formatting, or unnecessary symbols. More information on formatting text is here.

Be respectful
Treat everyone here with respect. Do not troll, provoke, or post insulting or abusive comments. Debate is welcome, but personal attacks are not. Users posting personal attacks or name-calling will be immediately suspended or banned. If necessary, moderators will delete rude, obnoxious, and abusive forum posts.

Look before posting
Before starting a new discussion, try to see if the topic is already being discussed by browsing or using the search function.

Credit sources
When sharing content from other sites, provide proper credit or a link. Do not repost content from this forum elsewhere without credit to the user.

No signatures
Do not sign your posts. Your username already appears with your message.

Direct links to films
Please do not post direct links on the forum to full copies of copyrighted films unless they are uploaded by a current licensee or owner. It is fine to say something is up on YouTube or another site without directly linking to the video itself.

More information on our rules and policies appears below. See the Criterion Forum Reference Guide to understand some long-standing forum inside jokes.

Hi everyone! This is a friendly reminder that name-calling of another member is grounds for automatic suspension and/or permanent banning. Everyone here has their own perspective and approach, and the proper way to engage with someone you disagree with is not belittling or dehumanizing them with your language choices. If you feel compelled to call a fellow board member a nasty name, consider stepping away from the computer or device and calming down instead of posting something you'll regret

You may have noticed that new thread creation is highly limited for users. This is by design, as we encourage everyone to find existing conversations to add to rather than creating new threads. Does your topic fall under one of the genres or decades under conversation here? Perhaps it belongs in a thread dedicated to a filmmaker found here? If it's a recent film without a dedicated thread, you could post your thoughts about it in the relevant "Films of 20XX" thread in this subform. It is thus very unlikely a new thread actually needs to be created, though sometimes new threads are split off by mods as needed.

HOWEVER, if you are certain you have a killer idea for a new thread or are not sure where your discussion could go, please PM a mod. The current most active mods are: domino harvey, Mr Sausage, and swo17 (and feel free to reach out to one of us first if you have any other issues that need mod attention)

By popular demand, any links to Jeffrey Wells/Hollywood Elsewhere, Armond White, or Dr. Svet Atanasov/Pro-Bassoonist/Pro-B of Blu-ray.com are banned unless they are shared in their dedicated threads (see links below). The first two have been unofficial policies for some time, but with the rise of Pro-B’s inflammatory statements on Blu-ray.com, this is now official mod policy. This ban includes links to Dr Svet Atanasov's Blu-ray.com reviews in threads for the respective films/releases, but does not include any non-Pro-B written Blu-ray.com reviews-- please double check before sharing any future Blu-ray.com reviews.

Any errant future links to these “critics” anywhere other than the following quarantined threads will either be moved or deleted at the whims of the moderators.

If you must:
The Armond White Thread - Armond White

The Jeffrey Wells Thread - Jeffrey Wells / Hollywood Elsewhere

Professional Bassoonery - Dr Svet Atanasov / Pro-Bassoonist / Pro-B (and all authored Blu-ray.com reviews and comments)

From here on in, complaints/rants about orange and teal go into this thread here: orange and teal.

Just like the Pro-B thread, you can expect any and every post that clutters up other threads to be moved there.
