Admirable service on every level - and the book on its own looks like a phenomenal piece of research.MichaelB wrote:Many thanks for that - I seem to have successfully ordered the 3-DVD version from cdmusic.cz (along with a load of Karel Zeman DVDs), so let's see if it arrives!

Somebody please tell me there's a non-Facets alternative somewhere in the world.

Re: Czech DVDs
I'm not aware of one. And because it's Facets I can't guarantee that it'll even be an improvement on my old NTSC videotape.

Re: Czech DVDs
My copy's been on order for some time.
I've been badgering Arrow to pick this one up (and the 4K version of The Firemen's Ball, for which Arrow also owns the UK video rights), so it might be worth waiting to see if they do. I don't yet know if the extras on the Czech Closely Observed Trains disc are English-friendly, but the interviews on The Firemen's Ball definitely aren't.

Re: Czech DVDs
I emailed the Czech NFA to ask them to confirm that this is indeed the bluray version (as it doesn't specify on the page itself) and received this interesting response:admira wrote:http://nfa.cz/en/e-shop/films/?a=5411
"The price 539,00 Kc is for Bluray. Anyway, The Arrow Films company is releasing DVD and also BD of Ostře sledované vlaky soon so it will be available in the UK."
They certainly seem sure that Arrow have picked it up. Can anyone here confirm this?

Re: Czech DVDs
I doubt anyone but Arrow themselves can confirm it (and they'd presumably prefer to wait until a monthly announcement to do so), but I have this feeling we'll see them. Which would be great, it's always nice to see Arrow release Criterion spines that haven't been upgraded already!

Re: Czech DVDs
I've just picked up the Czech Closely Observed Trains, and I'm afraid none of the shorts have English subtitles - just Czech SDH.

Re: Czech DVDs
That's disappointing... still, it's better than the completely un-subbed All My Good Countrymen blu-ray.

No Blu-Ray announced yet, but the 4K restoration of Jiri Trnka's Old Czech Legends will premiere next month at Finale Plzen.

Re: Czech DVDs
This has been rereleased by the Czech National Film Archive. From what I can tell, this appears to be the 3 DVD set without the book.pistolwink wrote:This set of Czech animated films was discussed a few pages back.

To recap, there's a book and two DVD releases. One of the DVD releases is a 3-disc set that includes 76 films. The other is a 1-disc edition that presents a selection of 30 of those films.
I was able to get the 1-DVD compilation and the book, and I've tracked down the first disc of the 3-disc set. But the 3-disc set appears to have been extremely limited; WorldCat indicates that there aren't even any libraries that acquired it. Did anyone manage to get a copy of the full set?

Yes, it is definitely the 3 DVD set as confirmed here The article and the shop page for this re-release don't list the book so to be safe, I picked it up separately here.jindianajonz wrote:This has been rereleased by the Czech National Film Archive. This is my first time ordering from the NFA and my order apparently went through with my US address, but I am a little confused on how to pay. I think I have to send a money order to the NFA, but can anyone who has bought something from them delivered to the US and chosen to pay by money order comment on this or PM me? I can't find anything on their English website concerning it.

Re: Czech DVDs
I ordered that set earlier this year. You should get an email from someone at NFA within a few days after you place the order and they'll instruct you on how to pay. If I remember correctly they only accept payment through bank transfer, but you can write back and ask if they'll accept something else now (maybe policy has changed since I talked to them). They're really nice, but the process was a bit of a hassle.

Re: Czech DVDs
For cheap international bank transfers, use TransferWise. In all likelihood it is much cheaper than going through your bank, unless you have a special account.
