I think that is because the movie is in French & English, and the subs are French for the english parts --- could be mistaken, but I seem to recall reading that...

Thanks for the link. It's quite useful.
davidhare wrote:I hope this doesn't stretch too far outside your original notion of titles of interest. Given the monrning's announcement I thought anything like this needs to be managed in tandem with a region code "clearance."
My interests are provincial (I'm in the US) and self-serving (I have a blu-ray player and want to know about non-US releases I might be interested in purchasing, particularly Japanese, HK, and Korean releases with English subs, and European and Australian discs that are region free and subbed). I guess I could buy a second blu-ray player in region "B", but if I can hold off until the Chinese or whoever, inevitably, crack the region coding bs, all the better. But, you're right, the code issue is crucial, really the reason for starting the thread, and I was planning to include that info in the list above when available.

I'm not sure the new thread title is just right, since I'm not really interested in compiling a list of ALL international releases. ... ... But, you know what, maybe just leave it as it is - "International Blu-ray discs" ... on second thought, that's fine. And I'll just cull stuff for my little Americentric "not-available-in-the-US list" from the discussion.

Ideal, of course, would be a "Forthcoming Arthouse etc Blu-ray release" thread, like the long defunct (though still stickied) "New Forthcoming Foreign/Art/Indie DVD" thread, which treats releases from all regions. Unfortunately though, I don't think I'm the guy to manage such a list because, well, frankly, it sounds like it'd take a lot of time and my qualms about including stuff I thought was garbage would probably cause some tension. [In fact, I personally am not particularly interested in any of the abovementioned titles except Zodiac, but I figured a list with just a single title would be pretty pathetic!] Still, if anyone wants to take charge of such a thing, I'm not feeling the least bit proprietous.

Maybe someone did. But my link above to amazon UK says it's all-region, as do the dvdbeaver review of the disc and davidhare's Australian DTV Forum link above. I'll try to mark info with "?" if I haven't heard from the manufacturer or from someone who actually has the disc that it's region-free or subbed.

And here's another nifty link to info about region coded (or not) discs: nifty link.

It does not come with English subs. It was announced as such, labeled on the official site as such, yet I can confirm that it is not.

Minor correction: Avalon is actually in Polish, which might be the clincher for the two or three Polish-speakers 'round these parts. Or not.

From Japan, animator Michel Ocelot's most recent film, Azur et Asmar has English subs on the BR disc (and the SD DVD for that matter). The French SD DVD has no English subs.

Thanks all, for all the corrections/confirmations/suggestions/links/updates so far. And thanks in advance for those that're forthcoming.

Zodiac blu-ray now up at amazon.co.uk. See link in top post.

Donald Brown posted the link to Tartan UK blu-ray news in another thread.

In sum:

Paranoid Park, 4.28
Lady Vengeance, 5.26
I'm A Cyborg, 5.26
The Proposition, 6.26

I'll add amazon-uk links above when they become available.

Mr Denti A has posted a link in the "blu-ray v hddvd" thread which suggests these will be coming on through Tartan US too, in which case I'll delete them as soon as the amazon-us or other pages go up.

Also added: rAjp Erin Brockovich, 4.23

I'm stunned by this one: a French Paranoid Park - coming 4.24.

Also: a German There Will Be Blood - coming 6.12, Paramount.

I'm sooo not a Tarantino fan - though Death Proof made me laugh - but I'm adding the British Pulp Fiction, and KB1&2 above. Release dates: 3.30. You'd think US releases would be inevitable, but none are listed yet at amazon-us.

And, fyi, the Almost Famous disc Luke M links above is reportedly region free.

A quick note that earlier last night French giant distrib Studio Canal officially switched to Blu-Ray exclusivity, with Jean-Jacques Annaud's Sa Majeste Minor set for an April 22 release:

Info courtesy of Filmsactu.com:

- Un making-of (68min)

A bunch of new titles from Megastar:

As Tears Go By, Wong Kar-wai
Assembly, Feng Xiaogang
A Chinese Odyssey (Parts 1 & 2), Jeffrey Lau
Days of Being Wild, Wong Kar-wai
Exiled, Johnnie To
Infernal Affairs II, Andrew Lau & Alan Mak
Infernal Affairs III, Andrew Lau & Alan Mak
Perhaps Love, Peter Chan
The Warlords, Peter Chan

Some very exciting titles in there, but only Infernal Affairs III seems to have a solid date (April 28th) at this point. The entire IA series will also be released in a boxset.

I've deleted the French 400 Blows because, according to the new Criterion Newsletter, the following blu-ray will come from Criterion in the Fall. [See thread in "rumors and news"].

The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear

And: deleted There Will be Blood, The Proposition, and Be Kind Rewind, since they have been announced for US release. Added Mad Detective.

According to a 5/19 posting on DVD Times (for what it's worth):

"ITV DVD have announced the UK Blu-ray Disc release of six titles on 23rd June 2008. The first batch of titles from ITV will be priced at £19.99 each and cover a wide range of genres. Exact features are TBC, though we expect bonus features to match the existing DVD releases. We can also confirm the discs will not be region coded.

The titles are: Black Narcissus, The Boys from Brazil, Bugsy Malone, Escape to Athena, Great Expectations and Strictly Ballroom. "
