I am trying to take screencaps of my some Region 2 DVDs, but they will not play on my computer with VLC. So far, I have been able to take screencaps from my R2 "Picnic at Hanging Rock" and "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" DVDs. But "Celine and Julie Go Boating," "The Innocents," "Paperhouse," and "Kwaidan" will not play. Does anyone know why this is so? I was led to believe that VLC would play all discs.
Try downloading an older version, perhaps - a similar happened to me when I got a new laptop (some sort of compatibility problem)...

I've always restricted myself to posting six caps per DVD, as I think this is sufficient to give a sense of the transfer quality. Could others do the same?

Just so people know, putting images in spoiler tags does not prevent the browser from loading them, so you might as well not bother. I have looked into lowering the number of posts per page in this particular thread, but it looks like we'd have to change that number for all threads on the board.

Even though it's not as pretty as a long thread full of images, perhaps you all can, in the future, do as I did with colin's post above and put IMG tags only on 5-6 images and then, if you want to provide more images, just post the links so people can click through if they wish.

The German disc of A Short Film About Killing looks great compared to AE, but is it really true (as listed on ofdb) that it has German dub and no original Polish audio?

Comparison screens for Godard's King Lear taken from an old VHS rip and the new R2 MGM DVD, maddeningly cropped at 1.85:1.

Mon Oncle from the new BFI Jacques Tati Collection, chosen to match Beaver framegrabs.

This is a reissue of the old disc - the giveaway being that it still opens with the pre-2006 BFI logo.

Jean-Luc Godard's 'Eloge De L'Amour' (2001) (released as a two-disc double pack with 'Notre Musique')

Cahiers Du Cinema / Why Not Prductions
DVD 9
Region 2
4:3 PAL, fullscreen
DD 5.1 (448kbps)
Subtitles: English (removable!)
Extras: 2 PDFs of articles
Released: 2007, France

http://dubrosa.tripod.com/Eloge/PDVD_006.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Comparisions for this version can be found here http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReview ... oflove.htm. With correct aspect ratio, removable English subtitles and 5.1 sound personally I think this release is going to be the best all-round version of this long mistreated title.

Can be bought direct from Why Not or other French retailers. Easy enough without any French language skills. :D

Jean-Luc Godard's 'Notre Musique' (2003) (released as a two-disc double pack with 'Eloge De L'Amour')

Cahiers Du Cinema / Why Not Productions
DVD 9
Region 2
4:3 PAL, fullscreen
DD 5.1 (448kbps)
Subtitles: English (removable) French (non-removable)
Extras: 'Priere pour Refuzniks (1)' & 'Priere pour Refuzniks (2)' & 1 PDF article
Released: 2007, France

http://dubrosa.tripod.com/NotreMusique/PDVD_007.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Extras include the recent shorts films 'Priere pour Refuzniks (1)' & 'Priere pour Refuzniks (2)':
4:3 PAL / DD 2.0
No subtitles

'Priere pour Refuzniks (1)'

http://dubrosa.tripod.com/NotreMusique/ ... VD_006.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Sadly, this excellent release has been let down by the inclusion of non-removable and burnt in French subtitles during the Arabic and Hebrew language sections of the film. This accounts for about 20% of the film. The English subtitles sit above the French subs so the amount of screen space lost overall is quite a lot.

Comparisions for this title can be found here http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReview ... review.htm.

With correct aspect ratio, 5.1 sound and some nice, unique extras this version should be the best but the burnt in French subtitles ruin it completely. So the best version is still the Optimum release, however as a twofer with the top-notch 'Eloge De L'Amour' (see post above), it is still an excellent buy for Godard fans.

Get it from Why Not Productions http://www.whynotproductions.fr/article.php?id=22

The Cahiers release has no visible combing (see caps 4 & 7) and better dynamic audio but had audible noise and some pops. The image does have too much contrast and the images are cropped slightly.

The Studio Canal has much higher video bitrate, yet seems a little murky at times and less sharp. It has some minor combing and lower audio bitrate but seemed less noisy and more even (ie. less dynamic)

I would like to see comparisons with the NTSC release from Fox Lorber if anyone has any to offer?

Maybe you should add a parenthetical "links strongly preferred" to the thread caption.
