New French DVDs with English subtitles

A couple of interesting French films freshly released and with English subs.

Les Invisibles(OF2B), directed by Thierry Jousse (ex-Editor in chief of Cahiers du Cinema) with Laurent Lucas as a musician looking for new sounds who gets hooked on a woman's voice he hears over a weird chat line and meets her in the dark. With Michael Lonsdale in a supporting role. A couple of scenes strongly influenced by Lynch. I liked it.

Adieu (Arte) directed by Arnaud des Pallieres (also with Laurent Lucas and Michael Lonsdale), I haven't seen that one yet, but it got rave reviews in France.

I can't believe it! Christmas in February. I happened to see "The Lucid Eye", the impressive retrospective of his photographic work in 2001, that was accompanied by a well researched book/catalog:

A dozen of his documentary films were screened at this retro as well, and IMHO Van Der Keuken is one of the most important documentarists of his generation, best comparable perhaps to Ioris Ivens.
His point of view is always "concerned", his compositions are perfect, though breath spontaneity, and his editing, often metonymic and associative, is utterly poetic.
I didn't dare to hope for a DVD release, because the Ivens box (Ivens being the better known film-maker) is delayed for years and years now.
ARTE is really taking risks at the moment.

I have it on a Japanese DVD, but this new French edition comes with English subtitles, apparently:

The same seller as that link have a DVD of The Music Room. Says it has English subs. Anyone seen that one yet?

Yes, that Music Room DVD can be played with either French or English subtitles. Picture quality is fine, but with some print damage here and there. There's a DVD Beaver review:

Disagre that "print quality is fine". This DVD looks extraordinarily over-contrasty -- and I have been told that the US video release (is it o/p?) looked considerably better. It may be the only game in town -- but the quality is way below the level of FsF's nice Bunuel releases (which came out around the same time).

The van der Keuken dvds are not region coded and NTSC, each box as a big booklet in several languages and the PQ is good. Strongly recommended.

Glad to hear about the quality of the van der Keuken DVDs, my order's on hold until Amazon.fr can get more Vol. 2 is stock.

I'm really looking forward to this set and the Ruiz.

Correct. Disc 2 (with all the extras) is subless. No subtitles for the commentary, either.

What are René Féret's films like? I don't believe any of them have been released outside of France.

"Mystère Alexina" is an extraordinarily good film, dealing with a delicate subject: a true story of a 19th century "hermaphrodite" (who was in fact just a boy mistakenly raised as a girl). It stands comparison with Truffaut ("L'enfant sauvage") and Bresson.

I also like "Promenades d'été", which is much lighter in tone and more frivolous, but utterly charming (a tale of first love set amongst a troupe of actors on tour in rural France). Beautifully acted by a cast of Féret regulars: Valérie Stroh, Samuel Le Bihan, Cécile Bois...

Amongst his other films, "Histoire de Paul", "La communion solennelle", "BaptÃªme", "La place d'un autre" and "L'enfant du pays" constitute an autobiographical cycle.

You can view trailers for all the films on the www.reneferet.com site.

At 5.40 Euros per film, the box set is a bargain.
