BoJack Horseman

#1 Post by flyonthewall2983 » Fri Dec 19, 2014 9:40 pm

I was very surprised with the quality of this, as someone who isn't a huge fan of animated comedies that didn't air on Fox. While Bob's Burgers now evokes some of the charm of the early years of The Simpsons, this summons up the more cerebral and serious side while never losing it's funny bone either. It's also cutting Hollywood satire that blends in well with the Animal Farm allusions throughout.

Netflix just put up a Christmas episode, which you could actually watch first and not be spoiled as to anything going on during the first season.

Bojack Horseman is pretty good. Netflix really did themselves a disservice with critics. All those rotten tomatoes and metacritic scores are based off the screeners they sent out to the press with the first 6 episodes. Those initial episodes were your typical Fox/Comedy Central/Adult Swim raunchy animated sitcom. It's the later episodes which go to some pretty dark places and is reminiscent of early Simpsons or some of the great melancholy episodes of Futurama. The episode with Bojack visiting his estranged friend dying of cancer is particularly disturbing. The Christmas special was slight but a fun treat. Looking forward to season 2. The nice thing about Netflix is that it seems easier to get a renewal; since I'm sure it probably would have been pulled mid season or cancelled if it has landed on FOX.

It also has one of the better title sequences I've seen in awhile.

Breezed through season 2. It goes deeper down the darker corridors explored in it's first episodes, while again never losing it's comedic touch. Probably my favorite Netflix original right now.

Seriously surprised at the lack of enthusiasm for this show here.

Finished up the third season. It gets deeper and darker but all the more funny too. Even more impressive guest star turns too. Just amazing.

For some reason I thought the new season was out on Sunday, not today. Can't wait to get started on it later today and get some discussion going.

Their stuff always drops on Friday I believe. And they just announced that it was picked up for a 4th season.

The fourth episode alone will probably get tons of notices in year-end lists.

Just started watching this, I just begun season 2.

Actually the first episodes weren't that great, funny but not really original. So I was afraid when it took a turn for a more dramatic approach, but in the end it's deeply moving and very human, they really nailed the balance between tragedy and comedy. So I'm very enthusiastic to see the rest of the show!

I'm not a big fan of the series' comedy, but the dramatic aspects I love. There are quite a few moments where it touches on some deeply moving material, the likes of which I haven't seen since Mad Men, and those keep me watching. I think season 3's ending was the show at its best.
