Re: Old School Nick
I was always more drawn to the commercials for girls stuff (and girls in general) growing up, as the commercials for boys were all about shit I could not care less about: fighting, monsters, weapons, battles, etc. Who wouldn't rather make some cupcakes or something? (Although this is one of the inescapably catchy jingles ever-- it still pops into my head on a too-regular basis)

Re: Old School Nick
That just brought back a primal "My parents must buy this for me" urge that I haven't felt for 20 years. So um, thanks?domino harvey wrote:Although this is one of the inescapably catchy jingles ever

You see Polly Pocket now? They don't really fit in your pocket anymore so the name doesn't make much sense.

It's like those huge-ass phones that can only fit in a huge ass purse. Hey, we've got a good standup routine brewing here...

I totally had a TalkBoy classic like in the Home Alone movie when I was a kid and it was actually fun. Somewhere out in the world there's a cassette of eleven-year-old me imitating Bill Cosby for 45 minutes. I didn't have an older sister, though, so I didn't get to usurp the excellent "Stop drooling on me" prank

Dom, I literally gave my little brother (me...8? brother...5?) a haircut after being inspired by Goo's dollar sign haircut given to the little brother. This also happened a day before my mom had scheduled my brother and I to go to JC Penny to get our picture taken. The pictures were rescheduled.
The haircut wasn't a dollar sign unfortunately, though. Just poorly cut hair.

Awesome! Someone on the internet made a smashcut of every instance of the words "Cool Dr Money Haircut" from that episode, because of course someone did

I still flashback to that episode every time I get a haircut. Every. Damn. Time.

I also heavily associate the show with the Charlotte Hornets. They must've been an integral part right? Not just the fact that both were set in Charlotte?

This thread is making me realize I knew more about the show than I had remembered. Aside from "Don't hold your breatthh!" and the dollar sign haircut, Wikipedia tells me it was also the source of the odd inflection of the phrase "Hit me!, Hit me!", which even as a kid had me asking "who else would he be hitting?" Also, I honestly assumed that Cool Dr Money was a legitimate if forgotten rapper from back in the day, not a character from this show.

In the TV universe, Cool Dr. Money is related to Dr. Money the infomercial king on King of the Hill, right?

And on the opposite end of the spectrum, I thought Kendall Gill was fictional!jindianajonz wrote:Also, I honestly assumed that Cool Dr Money was a legitimate if forgotten rapper from back in the day, not a character from this show.

Re: Old School Nick
It only lasted 13 episodes? Wow, how memories distort things. It's one of the old Nick shows that sticks out the most in my mind, probably because I watched it nearly everyday.
They do make a good point about sitcoms centered around black characters. Networks in the past had a small but noticeable run of shows featuring primarily black actors but recently any representation on the small screen is non-existent.

Shout! has released the Complete Series of Hey Arnold as a Wal-Mart exclusive for a ridiculously low $29.93 MSRP. It's sold out online here, but apparently you can find it for $20 in stores (and it's going for 3-5 times that on eBay!)

I seem to recall the phrase "Don't just sit there!" from possibly late 80's/early 90's Nick. Does anyone recall the show that used it?
On a side note, I once worked with a guy that was a on Double Dare as a kid. I forgot to ask him if he did a physical challenge but if I recall correctly nobody really passed those.

It was... Don't Just Sit There, where the hosts would come up with activities the viewing audience could do (baking, crafting, etc) instead of, you know

The physical challenge certainly had a better pass rate than the kids at the end of the Legends of the Hidden Temple.ShellOilJunior wrote:I seem to recall the phrase "Don't just sit there!" from possibly late 80's/early 90's Nick. Does anyone recall the show that used it?

I really enjoyed reading that to a certain point (the ins and outs of how it was produced, how one finds out they won, etc), then realized I was reading through "What OTHER toys did you get?!" responses and got sidetracked wondering who the hell is editing these pieces over at The A.V. Club these days.

When I was a 90s kid I would have been fascinated to find out that level of minutae, but I can't say as a 10s adult I have the same level of curiosity about KB Toys' video game return policy
