I remember reading somewhere -- can't remember where now -- that Ryan probably worked with more auteurs than any other American actor: Anthony Mann, Nick Ray, Jean Renoir, Joseph Losey, Fritz Lang, Sam Peckinpah, Sam Fuller, Robert Aldrich, Jacques Tourneur, etc.
That's certainly an impressive list. I've always thought the Ingrid Bergman is the actor to beat in terms of the range and quality of first-rank auteurs she worked with: Hitchcock, Rossellini, Renoir, Bergman, Cukor, Minnelli - plus the not-to-be-sniffed-at Molander, Curtiz, McCarey, Milestone, Wicki and Lumet. Ryan's resume doesn't have the international breadth of Bergman's, but there are arguably more great films (and great performances) in there.
