Even if you don't own a DVD, buy a used one from Ebay or Amazon Marketplace, because it will work out cheaper than acquiring the blu-ray! Maybe in some cases they lower the blu-ray prices to discourage people from doing that, but it's worth considering if you are after a particular film. 8-)

Now, Warner has updated the DVD2Blu program to specify you can send in ANY commercially pressed (non-porn) DVD for exchange. Great deal if you've got lots of shit DVDs lying around.

From Warner's viewpoint, this seems a bizarre scheme, given those reports a year or two ago that they paid companies to destroy their own stocks of new DVDs they found unsaleable (but some of which found their way into bargain stores). What are they going to do with all the crap discs they acquire? As they don't want the cases, there's obviously no intention of re-selling them - unless discs have re-cycling value now? (But wouldn't porn re-cycle just as well!?) I suppose it's just psychological marketing to get people into the mindframe of upgrading, but I can't help feeling they might as well just charge $4.95 each for those Blu-rays they want to shift without all this nonsense.

HMV here in Canada had a similar program a couple of times in the last couple years where you could get 5$ off (pre-tax, so it ended up being more like $5.65) most blu-rays if you traded in any old DVD. I asked a clerk once what HMV did with the old DVDs they received, and the clerk had no idea.

It's a pretty amazing deal. If I didn't have all of the discs on this list that I want already, I'd jump on this right away. Makes me wish it were going on back when I got my first Blu-ray player and was upgrading as many films as possible.

7. Each household may only obtain a single Blu-ray copy of a Participating Title. An order for two of the same Participating Title will not be honored. Rather, the order will be honored only as to one Blu-ray copy of the Participating Title so long as the order otherwise complies with the DVD2Blu Program Terms.

8. Limit: You may only order, collectively, up to a total of twenty-five (25) Participating Titles combined per household. A season of a TV show will count as one (1) Participating Title.

I don't own any of these Blu-rays, so I just ordered over a dozen. Seems like a good time to re-acquire a lot of the Kubricks, for example. I'm about 90% sure Warner will not make Barry Lyndon a boxset exclusive next year, but one never knows with them.
I'm thinking they won't scrutinize the DVDs I send too closely and will accept dollar-store public-domain discs. They'll probably just check to see if they're factory-made discs, and not DVD-Rs of that gangsta movie somebody's friend made when he took that film course last year.

My first thought was there must be some catch, that this is too good to be true. However, it's easy to imagine that Warner has a huge surplus of most of these titles. Most that I checked seem to have a selling price of around $9.99 so this is probably the equivalent of the WB Shop running a 60-70% off sale. The reason they're continuing the hassle of having people send in junk DVDs is probably the hope of giving a psychological nudge to the casual movie-buying public to start on the project of upgrading their whole DVD collections to Blu-ray rather than just buying the occasional BR here and there. (Good luck with that.)

As far as I can tell, if you send two discs, it counts as two dvds.

I'm planning to send 2 Alpha titles as well as a micro-indie DVD of Meredith Monk's film work. If someone thinks the latter is excessively reckless, please chime in. It looks factory pressed (?), but list no company other than meredithmonk.org. Also, do 8 DVDs sans packaging top 13 oz.?

Seriously so any dvd for a blu for 4.95 each? has anyone tried it yet? I'd love to send in my copy of 2001 for the blu ray and my copy of Assassination of Jesse James for the blu.

This seems like such a great deal, but when I checked out the reviews for all the titles I liked, all of them seemed to have heavy DNR and edge enhancements. I have a lot of crappy DVDs I could get rid of, but even $5 seems like a lot for a bunch of mediocre blu rays.

It's a steal though for anyone who doesn't have the Kubricks.
