Did Criterion seriously not want this?

Clearly Sony wanted the film to have the prestige that only TCM can bring to a release.FrauBlucher wrote:Did Criterion seriously not want this?
What a load of shit. Well, at least it didn't end up at Twilight Time.

Apparently it loses the Bogdanovich commentary and adds one by Eddie Muller.

Yup, I'm sure going to enjoy buying this for $55 from TCM (and maybe customs fees on top? make it $80). From SAE and evil old Twilight Time this would have cost me $40 with a guarantee of no customs fees.Minkin wrote:Well, at least it didn't end up at Twilight Time.
Hoping and praying for a UK release from Sony instead.

These TCM Vault Collection titles are not TCM Shop exclusives. They might be for a short time, but you should be able to get them from Amazon eventually.

Re: Columbia Classics
I don't see any of the Vault titles through Amazon themselves, only third party sellers. Some are even more expensive than the TCM prices. But Iron Petticoat is pretty cheap so hopefully the same guys will offer Lady from Shanghai as well.

You can usually get these Vault titles from Movies Unlimited, but I have no idea what their overseas rates are.

Re: TCM Vault Collection
What does it mean by "Digital Bonus Features on the DVD Include:"? I am highly confused by this heading. So there are no extra features on BD? The extra features on the DVD are "digital" downloads or something? Does anybody has a better idea?

Re: TCM Vault Collection
What's up with the bonus features being relegated to the DVD only?* I'm a little surprised that a new 4K restoration is coming out as a TCM Vault Collection release, but happy to have it.domino harvey wrote:the Lady From Shanghai Blu-ray/DVD combo coming Jan 27
*I see we posted at the same time. I didn't even notice the word "digital" in front of "bonus features". Hmm.

Re: TCM Vault Collection
I think that's TCM's default heading-- the same thing is in the Iron Petticoat listing, which was also Blu-ray/DVD combo. Worth noting that release had unadvertised english subtitles, so those complaining should at least wait to see if that's the case here again

Jeeze. Either TCM seriously screwed this one up, or they send the world's worst screeners.FrauBlucher wrote:It sounds disappointing (a DVD case, wtf!).

I hope TCM only got this as part of some backroom deal, and Criterion will do the title justice in a year or two.

Re: Columbia Classics
Not saying one can't be disappointed with those aspects, but many of them are not too big of deal to me in principle.
- I have many BD25 releases that are just fine
- Same goes for VC1
- 1.0 Mono right? Is lossless anything more than a placebo effect?
- No subs is to be expected for most specialty label releases these days (though it does stink for anyone who is hard of hearing)
- I'd rather have BD packaging, but I've dealt with DVD sized packaging before (Apocalypse Now box w/ Heart of Darkness) Was Iron Petticoat a DVD case?
Ultimately does it look and sound good? Tech specs aside this is the real line I draw.

Re: Columbia Classics
Firstly, (and I know these are not big deals - alone) the package is a standard Keep case (as in DVD-standard sized.)

Re: Columbia Classics
Thanks. I just found that in Gary's review. Who does that these days? I already have a perfect DVD with subtitle. How can I cancel my order?domino harvey wrote:Firstly, (and I know these are not big deals - alone) the package is a standard Keep case (as in DVD-standard sized.)

You mean you don't want to update for an internet podcast that's on the Blu-ray for some reason?

Re: TCM Vault Collection
Will you? I am not really a big fan of this film or Mr. Welles. As I previously mentioned, I already own a DVD, which looks great. I just sent TCM an email, hope they will cancel the order.domino harvey wrote:You mean you don't want to update for an internet podcast that's on the Blu-ray for some reason?

I forgot my [/sarcasm] tags! I'll probably pick it up eventually but this went from a surprisingly stacked release for TCM to underwhelming in a hurry

I'm talking in regards to 1.0 Mono specifically (and I did mean to say lossless before in that statement, so I fixed that).fdm wrote:If you have to ask, you'll never know.captveg wrote:- 1.0 Mono right? Is lossy anything more than a placebo effect?
I've never heard a significant difference when doing A/B comparisons on lossy/lossless 1.0 Mono tracks. In other words, for me this is not a deal breaker. Your miles will likely vary.
Stereo tracks are a different matter entirely.

Re: TCM Vault Collection
Considering the hype that Sony prepped a 4K master and that Bogdanovich's terrible impersonations of Welles would be gone, very disappointing.
Hopefully Sony International may put out a better release.

Sometimes I wish all the tech info was blocked on these discs so people would be forced to watch the movie and judge it on that rather than on codecs, file sizes and bitrate numbers....

Re: TCM Vault Collection
Looking at the screen captures (and ignoring the specs), I see no reason to "upgrade" (having a mere 50" plasma).captveg wrote:Sometimes I wish all the tech info was blocked on these discs so people would be forced to watch the movie and judge it on that rather than on codecs, file sizes and bitrate numbers....
