No, but you could look into an indoor antenna.

Have you tried connecting your TV (is it an HDTV? If so, it likely has a QAM tuner) to the cable jack anyway? Often, the networks are being transmitted in the clear even when you're not playing for cable.

I haven't tried that yet - thanks! If that doesn't work, I guess I'll be out buying and OTA antenna.

I like my Apple TV more and more - last night, I was looking up an iPhone video clip of my daughter singing, with the original intention of handing it over to my wife so she could watch it, but I spotted a symbol at the bottom of the screen that I didn't recognise. So I pressed it, and it asked if I wanted to watch the clip on the iPhone or the Apple TV. So I naturally selected the latter, and it popped up on our 42" plasma in a matter of seconds.

I'd been vaguely aware of Apple's Airplay facility, but that was the first time I'd got to see how it worked in practice.

Posted this in the bargains thread, but also here just in case: Toys R' Us has the Roku 2 XS on clearance for $49.99 both online and in-store, while supplies last.

If you have a Roku, be sure to add the Fandor channel. They've been adding a ton of stuff lately. I was going to say "great stuff" but while these Lippert noirs are highly enjoyable, they are in no way great. Except for Loan Shark. That was mind-meltingly amazing. These types of earnest message movies need to be revived. And they need to cast Nicolas Cage in them.

Did VLC change their software recently or something? I've been trying to get any of my PAL discs to play on my laptop for the past hour or so to no avail.

What's happening when you attempt to play them?

I've been doing a bit of experimenting with the Curzon On Demand service (which I assume is exclusive to the UK), and found that I can easily stream video to my Apple TV box (and therefore my 42" plasma) via my MacBook's Airplay facility.

Which is handy - and the results look surprisingly good.

Nothing. It's as if there was no disc. I eventually got it to work with a different disc though (the fourth).

With further research the problem almost seems to be a DVD equivalent to a firmware update it seems with some DVDs like The Little Norse Prince and Secret Beyond the Door working perfectly while others like Miracle in Milan and the Peter de Rome set not working at all.

So updating VLC to the latest release fixed the problem? I think I had this exact same problem once - and updating VLC solved everything.

The problem isn't fixed yet. Where should I go to update VLC? I just meant that higher quality new releases (Kokoro worked just fine) aren't working.

You can find it on the "help bar" if using windows - (when the program is open).

Thinking about it more, I actually think I had to un-install and re-download/install VLC to get it to work again. Perhaps try that if fully updated.

VLC can be temperamental sometimes.

Perhaps it's the same problem I had recently with the BFI Chaplin at Keystone discs. It takes AnyDVD a month of Sundays to read them and get past the protection on them.

With the update (that I was sorely needing) that seems to be the case though the ultimate test will be the Pasolini's.

I was playing around looking at the channels on my roku box when I came across one by Flickstream called Kung Fu Theater and checked it out. I was stunned to find Oshima's Diary of a Shinjuku Thief available there. Kaneto Shindo's movie about Hokusai with horrible english title Edo Porn is also available on several of the Adrise channels. I believe these channesl are available on multiple streaming systems such as Apple TV too. Haven't actually watched them yet so I can't vouch for the quality, but I thought it was worth mentioning...

Was wondering if anyone has gotten the Roku stick yet and if it worked.

CanIStream. It has undergone a much-needed re-design, a highlight of which is the addition of a search for TV shows.

Low quality stuff usually, but I really enjoy watching some of the films on YouTube through the Plex app on the Roku.

One year later!

Since moving to Wellington where the impossibe is possible and both FTA and Cable TV is worse than OZ (not to mention atrocious compressed PQ) we are looking at a Roku 3. I would presumably also need a proxy server on some monthly rental arrangement to access either US or UK services.

Is anyone here who is also antipodean or non US/UK/Europe doing this, and how have they found it?

And does anyone have suggestions for capture software so one can DL and save material.

Amazon's thrown their hat into the ring with Amazon Fire TV, though most of the featured streaming clients included also came with my Sony Blu-ray player for about the same price as this thing

They seem to be trying to take a chunk of both the Ouya market (if there was one, which there isn't) and a chunk of the Roku/AppleTV/Chromecast market. But it certainly does seem crazy to me, as pretty much any toaster sold today can play Netflix. Also, no HBOGo will be a big red flag for most people - it's available on the other streaming boxes. I also find it pretty hard to believe that they can't include one controller with each one of these that gets sold - what's the point of having that Android-based game functionality if you need to purchase a separate controller?
