Distributors who supply booklets with their releases?

#1 Post by TheDoman » Sat Dec 18, 2010 9:04 am

Hey all, I’m trying to think of distributors and studios who frequently add booklets with their Blu-ray/DVD. So far I can only think of:
• Criterion
• BFI
• Second Run
• Eureka/MOC

Which have I missed?

Thanks

Every here and there you get one in Image Entertainment, as well as the great HVe sublabel (not sure if it still exists... anyone know btw??), which also brings to mind (since like HVe they were distrib by Image.. not so sure now, though) All-Day Entertainment-- I don't have a long list of their releases but off the top of my head I do have Epstein's USHER and the sublime CHRIST IN CONCRETE, and both have booklets.

Also under the Image flag is Milestone, with the occasional booklet a la PICCADILLY. Kino can occasionally get expansive a la DIE NIBELUNGEN, METROPOLIS, MAN WHO LAUGHS, TARTUFFE, NOSFERATU, etc.

Of course, the overlooked pearl of them all is the uh magesterial Alpha Video, who are currently putting the Harvard-caliber booklet together for the classic BULLDOG DRUMMOND WINCES AS HE APPLIES OINTMENT TO HIS PILES series... whoops sorry, that's just the gigantic catalog they shove in there.

Kino does the same thing... how many times did my eyes widen in a joy that quickly deflated as I quickly realize I'm tweezing not a booklet insert, but rather just another copy of the same old friggin catalogue.

^^Yep, that reminded me I forgot to put the Fox Film Noir line in there... and I guess their Studio Classics line too, as an afterthought.

Not to mention th magnificent books attached to the Borzage and Ford boxes... but those are a dif species altogether.

Though the little pamphlets in the noir line were all but worthless.

Big square-spined books in almost all PWA releases, and I think most of my Soda (UK) purchases have had substantial, useful booklets.

Maybe we should restart with additional information? A c for consistent provision of booklets, and a number of * depending on the quality: * = a slip of paper, ***** = a free.

F**Cun-! yes. Sad ideas need to be taken to their logical conclusion. Of course I just noted I accidentally deleted half of my last message before posting.

I was going to be more subtle, and rewrite the post to link here, but you beat me to the punch.

PWA is now NInA (National Audiovisual Institute), but otherwise you're absolutely right: just about the only releases that don't have hefty booklets are their animation anthologies. This may be because they've also published a separate book on the subject of Polish animation, but unlike their DVD releases it's not bilingual.

Axiom (UK) did some excellent booklets for their Wim Wenders releases.

My gift of the Charlie Brown holiday pack on Bluray didn't come with a booklet, but it did come with a coupon for 50 cents off frozen Super Pretzels. I would imagine for some, this would be the best kind of special feature.
Super Pretzels are disgusting- for those intrigued in the deal. I thought Disney was shameless with their product placement, but Warner Bros...

Further,

What are some opinions on the Bluray books? A sort of built in booklet. I would complain about the kitsch factor but at least they aren't in blue cases with only a "this disc is manufactured in HIGH DEFINITON" throwaway insert. The King Kong Bluray book is very lovely.
