Flipside 021: Voice Over

Image

'Fats' Bannerman is enjoying success as the writer and presenter of Thus Engaged, a romantic radio serial about the lives and loves of a Regency heroine. But when grim reality violently intrudes into Fats' life, his frail fantasies become unbalanced and his ability to separate fact from fiction breaks down, with devastating consequences. Featuring a compelling central performance from the great British screen actor Ian McNeice, this controversial film from award-winning Hollywood director Christopher Monger caused a sensation upon its original release.

Central Books list this as the next Flipside release. (Ignore the director credit - Jean-Jacques Vierne did one of the live action Tintin released last year - this'll be Christopher Monger's 1981 feature.)

BBFC has just classified Voice Over, confirming it is the 1981 Chris Monger feature. Monger’s Repeater (a feature-length 1979 comedy thriller with Alexei Sayle amongst its cast members) has also been classified so it’s a safe bet to expect that one amongst the extras.

VOICE OVER

A Film by Christopher Monger

Ian McNeice gives a finely nuanced performance as radio personality 'Fats' Bannerman who transposes aspects of his lonely, down-at-heel life to Miss Elizabeth , the romantic Regency heroine of his Jane Austen style radio series Thus Engaged. When grim reality violently intrudes into Fats' frail fantasies his ability to separate fact from fiction begins to break down.

A controversial early feature from a now-established Hollywood director, Chris Monger's Voice Over divided the critics -- whose judgments varied from 'sick and disturbing' (Time Out) to 'original and provoking' (The Guardian) -- on its release.

Special Features:

- Dual Format Edition: includes both the Blu-ray and the DVD of the film and the extras
- New High Definition restoration
- Repeater (Chris Monger, 1979, 76 mins): Experimental thriller dealing with a woman's confession of murder.
- llustrated booklet featuring essays, credits and biographical information
