Seventeen lists in ahead of the deadline. 21 eligible films so far. There is a one point difference separating first and second place.

Two Truths and a Lie:
A. The Top Five consists entirely of Criterion releases
B. The Top Five alternates in order between Mexican and French films
C. The current number one film was also eligible for the All Time List Project

I'm optimistically hoping that the first one is the lie (and Un Chien Andalou is the exception), but surely number two is, unless Viridiana, which is neither French nor Mexican, failed to make the top five, which would be a big surprise.

It may or may not be true (in reality or for this game), but IMDB lists it as a Spain-Mexico co-production, so assume Viridiana could be included in the second option

Eszterhases comed again:
Two Truths and a Lie:
A. The Top Five consists entirely of Criterion releases False Un chien Andalou was in the Top Five then and now
B. The Top Five alternates in order between Mexican and French films True Or so it was, at the time of writing the clue
C. The current number one film was also eligible for the All Time List Project True Same Number One then and now
The film that everyone on the initial ballots voted for was Los olvidados... and then as soon as the streak broke, almost no one else voted for it and it dropped way down overall!

My Top Ten:

01 the Milky Way
02 Simon of the Desert
03 the Exterminating Angel
04 Un chien Andalou
05 the Phantom of Liberty
06 Nazarin
07 Los olvidados
08 Viridiana
09 That Obscure Object of Desire
10 the Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz

Perhaps the only Bunuel I _don't_ like at all is Andalusian Dog (which I chalk up to too much Dali-ism). There are some others whose fault is just "not as interesting" as most of the others.

1. Nazarin
2. Los olvidados
3. El bruto
4. Susana
5. La Voie Lactée
6. Subida al cielo
7. La mort en ce jardin
8. Le journal d'une femme de chambre
9. Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie
10. The Young One

Excuses for Unconscionable Omissions
Exterminating Angel: I suppose if you had to a pick a single film that most embodies Buñuel, this would be it. I still don't like it all that much, though I recognize its qualities.
Viridiana: I've seen it three times, and as great as it is, I've always found the middle section a chore to sit through.
Belle de Jour: Buñuel made nastier films than this, but it's this one that, for whatever reason, I find unpleasant and depressing.
That Obscure Object of Desire: This was my first Buñuel, I loved it, it turned me on to a director who came to be a favourite. But revisiting it, I found it interminable from about the halfway mark.

Defenses of Indefensible Inclusions
El Bruto: I genuinely believe this is an excellent film, for reasons already given. I don't understand why it isn't more highly regarded.
Subida al cielo: Bit shocked that this was an orphan. Come on!
Diary of a Chambermaid: well, well, well, six others voted for it too, so I don't have to defend it after all. As I've said, I just love Moreau in this.
Death in the Garden: It's always a pleasant surprise when you like a film more on second viewing. So rewatching this and Diary... as homework for the list and finding them to be better than I remembered gave them a boost in my esteem. I really like Piccoli, Signoret, and Marchal here.

As always thanks for taking on this thankless job Dom. Sadly there was still about eight eligible films I didn't watch, but here's my top ten anyway. Thanks to whoever else voted for The Young One.

1. Los olvidados
2. Simon of the Desert
3. Viridiana
4. Las Hurdes
5. The Exterminating Angel
6. Susana
7. Nazarin
8. The Young One
9. The Milky Way
10.Un chien Andalou

I'm surprised there weren't more also rans and orphans, even with the small sample size. My top ten was:

Simon of the Desert
The Exterminating Angel
Un Chien Andalou
Las Hurdes
Viridiana
El
The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz
Los Olvidados
Nazarin
L'Age d'Or

I generally find his latter-day French films entertaining but comparatively toothless, and visually rather bland. He was never a particularly artsy director, but the best of his Mexican films often used unexpected stylistic flourishes (such as the dream sequence in Los Olvidados, or the early-cinema camera tricks in Simon of the Desert) as punctuation in a way that I really like.

This is basically my stance as well. I find him to actually be a pretty entertaining dramatist when dealing with soapy material like Susana or The Brute and that's lost in the arty late films while the naratively normal ones like Diary of a Chambermaid don't quite have the fun and energy of the Mexican ones.

I think my top 10 list really needed at least 17 slots....

Death in the Garden also worked even better second time around for me as well... (but not enough to make it onto my list). Young One is a pretty amazing film, but ditto ... Glad to see love for Bruto and Chambermaid....

My own ten.

1. That Obscure Object of Desire
2. the Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
3. the Exterminating Angel
4. the Phantom of Liberty
5. Simon of the Desert
6. Un Chien Andalou
7. the Milky Way
8. L'Age d'Or
9. Belle de jour
10. the Diary of a Chambermaid

I'm surprised to hear Bunuel's late films called toothless. Obscure Object, to me, is one of the bleakest and most stinging indictments of human romantic folly, a round so perpetual that Bunuel has no choice but to blow up his own film to end it.

It's relative. In his other films he blows up the world.

Blowing up your own film is the greater catastrophe.

Spider, you and I share 6 (in our top 8 no less) - while there are several others here that I share 5 with.

Mine:

1. La Voie lactée (The Milky Way)
2. Susana
3. Nazarin
4. La Mort en ce jardin (Death in the Garden)
5. Le Journal d’une femme de chambre
6. Viridiana
7. Los olvidados
8. L’Age d’or
9. The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz
10. Belle de jour

So that's 3 of us that really had an awakening with Death in the Garden this time around. I put in Belle de jour at no. 10 but I really have ambivalent feelings about it. I could have easily swapped it for Discreet Charm.

Thanks once again, domino!

Everyone else should be ashamed. As corrosive as any other major Buñuel, also filmic narrative and technical aspects were at his best.
