Criterion Designs (The Criterion Cover Art Book)

#1 Post by dwk » Tue Oct 14, 2014 6:15 pm

From Criterion's instagram:
We've been keeping busy with a little October surprise...

Those look the same as the Grand Illusion paper they posted earlier, so I guess that isn't coming back

Are these postcards? (would be a welcome return after like a 8 year disappearance). If the Grand Illusion turns out to be just a postcard, well, I guess something is still going on with Studio Canal (Tati + Vanishing).

I wonder if they're going to release a coffee-table book of their cover designs?

Does anyone know what the one above Rome Open City is?

I wonder if they're going to begin to make cover artwork available as prints; several of the pieces that appear in the above photos have already been released as posters (Safety Last, Grand Illusion, Rome Open City, The Freshman).

Ah, I think you're correct. That would explain the layouts of those Autumn Sonata and Judex sheets (not to mention the explanatory text), as well as those sheets of gridded artwork.

Hidden Fortress, Jubilee, and Gimme Shelter share the sheet

I think the the other two "covers" on that sheet might just be collages.

EDIT: Jumping off from there, maybe this is Criterion: The Trading Card Game and those are checklist cards!

Yep. If you look closely, there appear to be captions next to some of the images.

Judging by the blurbs of text, I'm going to guess that it is indeed an artwork collection.

This year is Criterion's 30th anniversary. I was wondering if they planned to do anything special for it. I'm sure it's a The Criterion Collection: The First 30 Years coffee table book or something to that effect.

Maybe if it had legs, a la Kramer's design.

If only there was another way to have all my favorite movie covers from Criterion somehow.

For someone who's not a completist by any means but adores (most) of the company's artwork (and loves coffee table books), $125 doesn't seem too unreasonable. I'll still probably wait until it drops a little, but...

It does seem a little pointless. There are several I would buy as posters if I had unlimited money, but having them in a book doesn't do much for me.

But presumably there'll be supplementary content to justify it. Information about the artists or the original posters as the case may be, earlier versions and alternate designs, etc. Some of the CC design blogs I've seen are fascinating, so if this has even a fraction of that content it would be worth a look. I used to own a book of Absolut ads with a section of vetoed concepts and a brief explanation for each, so hopefully this will include something like that.

Next time I go to Barnes & Noble, I'll just flip through the book while I'm in the men's room.

I would totally buy it if it was just a book of all of their rejected covers. Pink Viridiana FTW!
