I'm not a fan of Kelly's films and I actually don't even enjoy his personality based on the interviews I've read, but I don't see why Criterion shouldn't allow Kelly to provide them with a list of his 10 favorite Criterion Collection DVDs to place on their monthly newsletter.a.khan wrote: ... "this guy has potential," because, frankly, he does. But so does Richard Kelly. Would we want to see him hawking his top ten DVDs? (Don't answer!)
Also, when did these lists start to come off as directors "hawking" their top ten DVDs? If someone asks me to provide a list of my favorite films and I comply, am I all of a sudden hawking these films?
How exactly is the previous paragraph not a demonstration of elitism? Following this same train of thought, magazines such as Film Comment and CinemaScope should be discarded for mentioning Godard and Tony Scott in the same issue (snarky comment in 3, 2, 1...) or making favorable comments about Richard Kelly and Hou Hsiao-hsien in the same paragraph.a.khan wrote:If I am slightly vexed at the thought of Mr. Rian Johnson -- with his one, debut film as alleged proof of genius -- being mentioned in the space shared by Bergman, Antonioni and Buñuel, then write me up, because I'm guilty as charged.... So why all this ballyhoo and accusations of elitism?
