HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......
Question: You guys wouldn't release a porno, would you?
Some of the users over on Criterionforum.org have been disputing
whether or not, If given the option to, you guys would release the film
"Deep Throat" with Linda Lovelace. I at first dismissed it outright, but
then thought about how influential and controversial it was. so my
question is, If you guys had the chance to release deep throat,
would you?
Dear Steve,
I really can't say. That would be up to the acquisitions department. I can
say that we have no plans for DEEP THROAT at this time.
Best,
JM

Not in the least. I was simply wording it that way to put a bit of priority on the question. I received a response faster than I have before. I just wanted to know what his response would be, since a few posts back we were talking about how it could be packaged. it's no big deal. And trust me, I'm not lobbying for porno on criterion, infact that's the last thing I would want. just wanted to know what his stance was. and I found it very funny that he seemed to have no problem with it if acquisitions approved it. notice how he didn't say "i've passed your suggestion on to the right people" like he does with almost every question that has a movie title in it.

I was probably one of the disputers being referenced - this subject came up in the Eclipse thread as well, and my basic input was that a friend and I had joked for years about a Deep Throat Criterion, and that, had they the guts to attempt the release, it would be a worthy addition. My reasoning, very briefly, was:

I mean, c'mon, even Barbara freaking Walters went out to see it.toiletduck! wrote:A select few hardcore films, notably BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR and DEEP THROAT have managed to grey that line between porn and "regular film"; Any hardcore pornography that has grossed anywhere from 100 to 600 million dollars seems to fit well in a 'continuing series of important classic and contemporary films', and, as far as I can tell, no one is scrambling to get the rights to a DEEP THROAT DVD.
Eh, it's all wishful thinking anyway... Criterion's shown some balls in their time (I'm currently working my way through BY BRAKHAGE and loving every second of it), but I can't say that I see Linda Lovelace in their future anytime soon.

The acquisitions department is deliberating on how to market this now as you read this. Linda is recording her commentary while gaging every few intervals of her session. And Peter Becker is deeply involved in the live-action interviews. JM secretly emailed me that this is the reason why there is no Mizoguchi, and a delay in getting the Eisensteins out. =P~

I don't understand why Deep Throat keeps getting talked about. It isn't a very good movie. There is only one good scene while most of the time during the sex they play this horrible theme song that actully has lyrics and drowns out the sexual noise. The only thing that makes this title worth a darn is its title and the fact that a lot of the cast was on drugs (In Linda's case reportedly against her will).
A good title would be The Opening of Misty Beethoven. That has very good acting, great writting and great sex. Or Taboo. Another classic to say the least. Dog Walker is another great one. A more modern film (Early 90's) that's out through Evil Angel.
As far as Criterion releasing an asult movie, I don't see why not, though it will never happen. I think to debate rather a film, no matter the genre, is "Worthy" enough to be "Criterion", that just pushes the boarders of being stuck up. Especially when there are a few movies already in the collection that by many o'standars wouldn't snuff the light of day of being a worthy release.
But I wish it would happen. The above mentioned films (Minus Dog Walker), really need a nice release. They need to be cleaned up picture wise, and some doc's on them would be great. And that is simply something that VCA and other "Vintage" adult lables just won't do.

Yeah, he told me that on this one, the guys are running loads of extra "checks of the transfer" and "quality control tests" so will take up a lot more of their time.cinephrenic wrote:JM secretly emailed me that this is the reason why there is no Mizoguchi, and a delay in getting the Eisensteins out. =P~

A pornographic film is one that is actually designed to sexually arouse, which, judging by the films of Breillat's that I've seen, isn't her aim. They might be sexually explicit, but they're involved with examining sexuality and relationships rather than titillation.

Hmmm....
Well how about Devil in the Flesh, In the Realm of the Senses, The Idiots? While it's fine to define porn as something to get one's rocks off, there are a number of great films that feature "graphic" sex that are actually pretty cool movies, which have been confined to obscurity because they have been labelled as porn.
Anyways...I just hope that Criterion/Eclipse stays away from Baise Moi with a 20 foot pole. Catherine Breillant looks like a genius next to this terrible movie.

=D> I agree 100%, I think that may be the one film that if was released on Criterion I would try not to get the whole collection. A bad film indeed.
