That's certainly the best guess yet. I think it has been rumored.

Doesn't rule it out I guess, but Mill Creek just barely put that out on BD six months ago.

What's the image between the tampopo and the poison?

Also, what's in between Jeanne and the counter?

Also, I feel like the wedding dress and tuxedo are very specific to a certain wedding party scene but can't recall it. They have to be more than simply "Marry S" and "Stalk R".

Well this is what I get for sleeping in, having checked earnestly until going to sleep. As the person who's responsible for putting all of these on the forthcoming list - I'm glad to see that every single clue that seemed to be dead-certain has changed about 10 times through other guessing. Thankfully there's some room for error with the "more certain" and "best guesses" separations.

Do note that, unlike monthly newsletter clues, which never :P have a double clue, New Years clues always have some double clues thrown in. So there's going to be some overlap and many guessing. All I can do is hopefully keep track of them, and do what I did last year, where it was: Exterminating Angels / Fallen Angels - and then see which gets announced first (despite both having been very likely, and Fallen Angels sounds like it will be announced yet, Exterminating Angels got there first).

So I don't doubt that there's some double clues in here that should be considered alongside each other. I know the tombstone is for They Live by Night - but you can't ignore that they did everything to make you think of Night of the Living Dead. Both films are very likely (though I'd think the Romero would be of higher interest to everyone), so why not consider both? Just like the Fanny, Cesar and Marius. You can't have a Roman statue with a fanny pack and not think of Roman Holiday. Plus the "Marry Us" seems to more aptly apply to the couple who are ready to get married, so I'd say that leaves the S clue open - as it would be "Marry Us" and not "Marry S".

Some genearal thoughts:

-Cuba/Puerto Rico flag. Interesting that the existence of two flags makes us question the answer. Do note that the flag on the left has 6 bars, whereas Cuba/Puerto Rico only have 5. I'm not sure if there's perhaps a city or some other type of flag somewhere that looks the same, only with 6 bars. Given the musical notes, Buena Vista is a certain. So its either up to us to identify the other flag, or question whether Polan just goofed.

-The Tampopo is in the D-pan, so it makes you wonder about the the noodle-y substance, next to the poison bottle. I think Arsenic and Old Lace (WB, former Laserdisc title) is the best guess.

-What the hell is between the Arsenic and Lace? Shrimp? Celery? Turkey leg? Then there's a little vaguely heart shaped object between this odd object + the poison.

-For some reason, One of Our Aircraft is Missing comes to mind with the missing pot on the wall.

-All of the candles are on the ground except for the one on top of the flagpole - which is also the only one dripping wax. This must be for something.

This is so far what I have for the forthcoming list (let me know if I've missed /goofed something):

Certains:

Ghost World
Fanny, Cesar, Marius
16 Candles
Buena Vista Social Club
Stalker
Dheepan
They Live by Night
Mysterious Object at Noon (Despite Swo's thoughts that somehow Second Run's release would have any affect on a Criterion release).
Tampopo
Dielman
--------------------------------------
Best other guesses:

Arsenic and Old Lace
Night of the Living Dead
Roman Holiday
Princess Bride
---------------------------------
??? - what's left to figure out
Window /scene = Quince Tree Sun? Sunrise? Tree of Life?
S + R + T
other 6-bar flag - West Side Story?
Missing pot - Missing?
"heart" + other object on table
Candle on flag with wax
Framing device (the location is usually a clue itself)

I think the clue is definitely for the Weerasethakul, and I don't think Second Run's release has any bearing on Criterion's (other than it coming out from Criterion UK), I was just pointing out a fact for anyone who might be mulling over which edition to choose.

Seems rather pointless on your part.

"hey guys, fuck Criterion and their clues, Second Run has it out already."

We should start doing this everytime anyone announces anything.

I took it less as a fuck you to Criterion and more as a there is a cheap edition out already for the curious.

I wish nothing but good things for both labels. I was just pointing out a fact because I was surprised when I looked it up to see that it was indeed region-free. Second Run's edition has some valuable extras too (an exclusive interview with the director, a short film, a Tony Rayns essay) so hopefully Criterion makes their release competitive.

I would hope for West Side Story that was mentioned, with finally the correct prologue, but it seems far fetched to me!

Oh boy, maybe the candles and their placement, along with the dripping candle is a clue for Barry Lyndon as well as Sixteen Candles.

Anne Biller was at Criterion recently so, far fetched, maybe that's a heart/tampon/bottle teasing THE LOVE WITCH.

I feel like there may be more going on with the S than the guesses so far have accounted for. It definitely looks like it's wearing a bridal veil, but its dress looks more like a nightgown than a wedding dress—I could just be overanalyzing it, though.

More importantly: what's with the three flowers on the floor underneath it? Is it just that three = Marseilles trilogy, or does the fact that they're flowers specifically mean something? (My brain keeps trying to twist it into a clue for a Daisies upgrade, but that would be one of those willfully stupid guesses.)

Xs on a jug does not mean poison; in cartoon language it universally stands for alcohol or moonshine. Skull and crossbones means poison.

Clearly they are releasing porn.

Or Vin Diesel's XXX (the third X being on the non-visible portion of the bottle).

Odd that the pans A, B, C, and E are on the wall (an unnecessary detail for hinting at Dheepan). I suspect there's another clue in there.

yeah, if it was for Missing (which was suggested), it would be great. (although i haven't seen the film but have heard good words about it)

Perhaps its a desert(ed) Heart(s) - which we already have confirmed as coming soon.

The flowers on the S's dress (which look like daisies, but I guess could pass as most any flower) + the flowery wreath that the character wears the entire film - does seem like an upgrade of Daisies. Insert Swo stating that it too has been released by Second Run with an essay .

Looking through other flags, it seems that either Polan goofed or the 6th bar on the flag is part of a clue.

I do think its poison and not alcohol (as wasn't that always the joke - equating poison with alcohol) - which again fits in with the strings that Dielman is working with. Arsenic and Old Lace fits the equation too well.

As to the R - Polyester came to mind regarding its appearance:

Other than candles featuring in the film prominently, is there anything more significant to suppose a Barry Lyndon clue? And I keep seeing people further suggest that there is somehow a Lana del Rey connection in this clue.

Lastly - perhaps the window ties in with the framing device - a hallway? The location seems to always have some sort of clue itself worked in.

Isn't this already done? It's highly informative too, I like to know what options there are, it's one of the reasons I come here.

On a purely selfish (and wishful thinking) note, I hope the birds through the window are crows in the act of being scared.

Schatzberg's Scarecrow is my dream Criterion.
