I'm sure they are thinking that VD/BVD are associated in-name-only so not really suitable for a dual release*, but I would have bought a 2-pack released priced at $69 (a la Complete Monterey Pop), but I'll probably take a pass on VD as a separate release.

(*Or it could have been a Fox decision.)

Something tells me they thought Beyond might move more on its own than having the two together at a higher price. The original, as far as I see online at least, isn't as popular, and I see the terms "boring" and "melodrama" thrown at it constantly. Of course that could be my bias since I don't care much for it, either (been years since I last saw it, though).

The modern day (well probably at the time too) hatred for melodrama is the most ridiculous and eye roll worthy aspect of cinephillia.

Sorry knives, all old Hollywood movies are either outdated relics or subversive works, no middle ground #freshtakes #realcinemastartedinthe70s

I'm a big fan of melodramas and even I can't sit through Valley of the Dolls. This is why I wondered if they were licensed as a pair. There are copious and obvious reasons for Criterion to release Beyond, but why would they even bother with Valley unless they were contractually obligated to. It doesn't distinguish itself in any way.

So you were hoping Criterion would say "My box has VD"? :-"

Oh, I agree and didn't mean to imply that's what I think is going against it or even a valid criticism (I just didn't find it particularly interesting). But that's usually the criticism I see thrown against it and I feel it will probably sell far less than Beyond.

It certainly will, but personally I like both equally if for dramatically different reasons. That said I'll probably dip on the Robson before the Meyer.
