Yeah, only two films released, and one of them was an upgrade.

Or even darker days of December 2003 (no releases) or, more recent, December 2007 (only Two-Lane Blacktop DVD was released).

Well, December was always traditionally the no-release / low-release month, so those were hardly surprising. (And surely it's been more recently than that that we've had a one- or two-release December?)

Whatever the case, I just think they occasionally will have months with a little less in them. Things shift on the schedule all the time so it's bound to happen now and then.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was another title on the schedule and then had to be pushed back.

Would like to see Berlin: Symphony of a Great City get a criterion.

It was licensed by Blackhawk Films. They now release through Flicker Alley.

Any reason to believe Criterion will release The Bride Wore Black?

Doubtful; Film Desk handles theatrical bookings, so it's probably not part of the package under Janus Films' control.

Film Desk offers their films to Criterion for home video distribution, but so far they haven't bitten.

The Film Desk only has theatrical rights for most of the films they distribute. On the rare occasion that they get both, they've licensed them to Zeitgeist. The video rights to the Truffaut titles that The Film Desk has put out are still with MGM.

Why release another Truffaut when they can just rererererererereissue the 400 Blows in a collectable inkbox?

It seems like weeks since we've had a new edition of The 400 Blows.

They're obviously trying to rerelease it so much to get to the lucrative "400th edition of 400 Blows". Only available in a limited edition run of 400 Blu copies.

I see it as similar to the way the giant dog Beethoven movies kept making sequels until they could finally make the "Beethoven's 5th" pun.

So I got a press release last night stating that Criterion has agreed to a "strategic alliance" with Phase 4 Films after they acquired ESI Distribution. Phase 4 doesn't exactly distribute what I would consider Criterion-worthy films, although they are distributing The Great Beauty. Any thoughts on this? Here's the skinny of Phase 4:
Phase 4 Films (http://www.phase4films.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) is one of the leading full service independent studios. With offices in nine cities in the U.S. and Canada, Phase 4 provides a full range of services relating to the sales, marketing, licensing and distribution of feature films, television and special interest content across all media in the North American market. Phase 4 is unique in the independent space as it maintains direct distribution relationships with major and secondary accounts across all content channels. Its recent releases include The Baytown Outlaws, starring Eva Longoria and Billy Bob Thornton, Shana Betz’ Free Ride starring Anna Paquin, and Lucy Walker’s critically-acclaimed The Crash Reel. Upcoming releases include Goodbye World, starring Adrian Grenier, and the Jay-Z documentary Made in America, directed by Ron Howard. Its dedicated kids & family label, kaboom! Entertainment, is one of the most recognizable brands in the market.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but does that mean it is a deal similar to the one with IFC?

“We needed a partner that could maximize our opportunities in Canada while simultaneously servicing some of our key U.S. accounts,” said Jonathan Turell, CEO of The Criterion Collection. “Our alliance with Phase 4 is an important next step that brings The Criterion Collection’s library of classic and contemporary films into even more households in North America.”
Sounds like they will be involved with distributing rather than liscensing new titles. The article mentions that ESI Distributors have a good relationship with CostCo, so maybe we'll start seeing more Criterion's there (I don't think I've seen any since the Dazed and Confused DVD)

There have been a decent amount of the Blus at Costco - usually 4 random titles once or twice a year

Cool... I moved away from a CostCo about 5 years ago, and the when I do go back once or twice a year not only are there never any Criterions, but the DVD area in general has shrunk tremendously.

I usually go to Lancaster or Santa Barbara, so maybe the ones I go to just aren't as film-focused as some of the others.

That image on Facebook of George C. Scott &Kubrick playing chess has got me wondering if 'Dr Strangelove' is coming this year...

Another Criterion LD title reissued on DVD/Blu.

No they're all pretty decimated but there are good deals when they do get stuff, mostly for catalog. It's very sporadic though and something you have to be in there every few weeks to catch them because once it's gone they don't restock, or if its there a certain time it gets pulled.

The only substantive extras they can add is the pie fight ending from MoMA's 35mm print and the theatrical trailer. I guess a commentary or two. It's the 50th anniversary and not exactly a stretch, but I'd rather see Spartacus get a proper release. Not to mention that Lolita and Barry Lyndon could use the Criterion treatment for supplements, despite Warner's discs having excellent transfers.
