Just a guess, but I suspect this is probably gonna be planned for release closer to the new Keanu Reeves film that will be released in theaters this December. Nothing like free advertising.

Realize this is a pretty fanciful list, but people here have speculated that Alexanderplatz is one of the least likely films to get a Blu due to its length.

Well, a blu set of Alexanderplatz has been announced in Japan.

I'd imagine they're saving Eraserhead for July. They view July, along with November, as their biggest months (or so it seems).

Is there any reason to believe that the original materials of Berlin Alexanderplatz (16mm negative apparently in bad shape) could lead to a significantly improved BD edition?

You'd think that 3:10 to Yuma would get priced down, but apparently having two interviews instead of one makes all the difference (see: Something Wild).

Jubal is a total surprise, right? I don't think I've even heard of that one.

Totally out of left field! But I'll take it. I love that film.

The interview with Glenn Ford's son is five hours long, including all the awkward silences, the tea and coffee breaks and the drive to and from the airport.

Fernando Croce rates 3:10 To Yuma as the lesser of Davies' westerns, with both Jubal and The Hanging Tree ahead. Anyone know who owns the latter? Maybe that'll arrive further down the line.

edit: just seeing it's in the Warner Archive.

Croce is right. 3:10 is nowhere near one of Daves worst westerns (and the westerns are his worst genre), but it is still pretty lackluster. The two you mentioned especially Jubal are great and play to Daves' strengths perfectly.

I'm hoping that Jubal turns out to be this year's Letter Never Sent because I find the May lineup pretty boring otherwise. I can't stand Godard and while I hugely admire Mike Leigh, Life Is Sweet is not a title I feel I need to own.

3:10 is great. Jubal, alas, is pretty stillborn -- in terms of talk vs. action, basically the opposite of The Letter Never Sent! You'd do better spending the time working on your Godard problem.

It's not as good as Letter Never Sent, but is still pretty great. I certainly recommend it as a purchase for those who don't already own the DVD.

I'd forgotten there was already a DVD of Jubal. I'd say this lineup is basically a dud apart from Life Is Sweet, then.

wow, a relatively terrible month. no eclipse, a solo upgrade that is wasted on Godard, a couple minor westerns, minor Leigh and Medium Cool.

I guess with buying 20 of the 26 releases from December to April, I should thank Criterion for making it so I can skip May (or maybe a single blind buy at most).

I know a lot of people love Godard, but I couldn't resist a little dig--bluray upgrades are good even for directors I don't care for it's the lack of any other upgrades that stings, not it being Godard, too bad we're not still getting the bluray upgrades at the 2011 pace.

I didn't think it was possible to hate Godard without qualification. And of course he went through so many metamorphoses that you can only say that knowledgeably if you've seen nearly all of his work. Which is a lot of time to spend on something you hate....

There have been nine in the first five months. Last year there were seven upgrades from Jan-May. 2011 had 12 in Jan-May. That all seems about the same to me.

I count 12.

Regardless, it's all arbitrary numbers. You hate Godard, therefore you're complaining. There's about 50 discs I want upgraded myself, and I'm not exactly eager for May's titles, but they only have so much time and capacity to please everyone.
