Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I can't agree about Lola - I saw a restored print at MoMA late last year and it looked GREAT. Very grainy in some scenes, but it felt like part of the aesthetic - natural light indoors on high speed film stock. (After all, Coutard was the D.P.) The current Blu-Ray blows because they tried to 'fix' this and made it look like wax. If they just keep it as close as they can to that film print, I'd be very happy.

Point taken, hope they can do better. Still, Umbrellas of Cherbourg is the one I'd like to see first of all.

For me it's #2, after La Dolce Vita.captveg wrote:That's one of my holy grail Blu-rays.bdlover wrote:Umbrellas of Cherbourg is the one I'd like to see first of all.
It seems that Agnes Varda doesn't have much time to do a complete restoration of Umbrellas of Cherbourg for the Cannes 2013 festival & the amount that she's asking for the restoration via crowdsourcing doesn't seem like enough either, but if you want to contribute you can do so here. Now the question of course is will Criterion/Janus get a hold of this?

If you can do with German subs, there's this. No idea how it looks though, although Universum is usually pretty reliable.Lowry_Sam wrote:For me it's #2, after La Dolce Vita.captveg wrote:That's one of my holy grail Blu-rays.bdlover wrote:Umbrellas of Cherbourg is the one I'd like to see first of all.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I actually can read german. The Japanese stills look nice, not sure if the Universum is the same, though I've actually heard mixed things about them. At this point though I can wait for a Criterion or Masters Of Cinema, whoever gets their hands on it first, I'm sure it's near the top of their highly-desirable acquisitions list.SternDiet wrote: No idea how it looks though, although Universum is usually pretty reliable.

Does anyone know who currently has the rights to Tobe Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre? The MPI release went out of print over a year ago. There was some rumors online that the film had been picked up by Warner Brothers and that they were going to put out an edition last fall...which never happened. I asked on Facebook and Warner says that they have no rights to this film.
I assume it's either Criterion or Shout that picked this up. For those who follow Cliff/Scream Factory; has he made any kind of comment regarding Texas Chainsaw Massacre?

I don't recall Cliff/Scream mentioning Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but I have to believe that they'd jump at the chance to release it (although, the MPI release is so packed with quality extras that I don't know what they, or Criterion, could add to make it worth picking up again.)

Any predictions, guesses, fantasies for Friday?
I'm thinking we see something totally unexpected, high profile but forgotten in the collective forum consciousness, like a Tarkovsky or a Rivette..

Life Aquatic Blu
Lord of the Flies Blu
Some big Italian film. They've done classic American, French and Japanese films in the past few months, maybe there's a pattern. Or they just want to mix it up

I wonder what's going on with the Grey Gardens/Beales of Grey Gardens Blu upgrade. The newsletter clue is from 14 months ago. Any logical reason for the delay, like a more timely cross promotion for something?

Indagine... would be the obvious one that has just been recently restored.MongooseCmr wrote:Life Aquatic Blu

Another possible option would be Synapse, amongst those that might be interested in the film for more than a quick sale. Though I'd have to agree with dwk, the Dark Sky release was pretty extensive.ianungstad wrote:I assume it's either Criterion or Shout that picked this up. Hey, they said they were working on Paris Nous Appartient something like 8 years ago. It's gotta be coming along one of these months!
And hear hear to a Grey Gardens upgrade finally coming out.

I'm waiting for Criterion to announce that they dicked around for so long that their rights lapsed: "Paris now belongs to somebody else."Gregory wrote:Hey, they said they were working on Paris Nous Appartient something like 8 years ago. It's gotta be coming along one of these months!

Did anyone ever figure out what that drunken dog newsletter clue was? I remember at the time everyone saying it was a Stray Dog/Drunken Angel crossover clue, but that always seemed very straw-graspy.

Besides, absent discovery of better elements and/or some major restorations, I would eat my hat if Criterion put out blu-rays of Stray Dog and Drunken Angel. I'd advise anyone holding off for those to go ahead and get the Criterion DVDs.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
No, actually La Dolce Vita is the obvious one, the restoration has been done for a while, and the German and Japanese blu-rays are already out, and the rights issues have probably been ruled on by now, even if there hasn't been a news story yet (and it looks like Paramount has the home video rights as they haven't deleted it from their catalog list). The question though is what nice features will Criterion assemble to fill up a second disc ?TMDaines wrote:Indagine... would be the obvious one that has just been recently restored.MongooseCmr wrote:Some big Italian film.

There's no way they'd announce something as huge as La Dolce Vita without at minimum a newsletter clue, and presumably a big teaser campaign or something.

They've been teasing titles in the newsletter that have already been announced on the hulu or New Years drawing, maybe they want to shock us with a big title out of nowhere.
