I don't see MGM releasing them on Blu anytime soon though and I'm a sucker for HD.MoonlitKnight wrote:Eh, the MGM disc was just fine (as were the other films in that set) -- and surely any Bergman buff would own that set by now. Criterion must be losing its touch, though, since it didn't release a single new Bergman title last year. Well Devil and Miss Jones was mentioned earlier, and in high school I saw a porno called Devil IN Miss Jones starring the great Georgina Spelvin. So there's that possibility.CSM126 wrote:I was thinking something more arthouse-y, but whatever.eerik wrote:Backdoor Sluts 9?CSM126 wrote:Some pornographic film?

Is The French Lieutenant’s Woman still a forthcoming Criterion release? Been a year or two since I've heard anything about that.

I hope not. That has got to be Streep's worst performance ever.

the Dardenne brothers' La Promesse.

Well, it definitely started her on her road to being pigeonholed into more overly showy, Oscar bait-y roles; a road from which she's only occasionally been able to get off of since then.chizbooga wrote:I hope not. That has got to be Streep's worst performance ever.

Yes, the transfer was fine but the commentary was terrible. Maybe next time they'll get someone else other than Mr. Magoo to do it.MoonlitKnight wrote:Eh, the MGM disc was just fine (as were the other films in that set)Calvin wrote:If there's any more Bergman, let's hope it's Persona

On the subject of Bergman Autumn Sonata and Cries and Whispers are two I would love to see reissued. Was there ever any hint for this?

If we're just speculating 'bout Bergman, The Magic Flute is desperately in need of a dramatic overhaul- it's probably one of the worst discs left in the collection at the moment.

Just to get really random, I see from the Juzo Itami thread that his films have started coming out on Blu-ray in Japan (no English subs). Wonder if Criterion would pick up Tampopo and maybe The Funeral. Itami is a natural for the coffee-table book sector of CC buyers.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I'd love it. The old Fox Lorber version was a lousy non-anamorphic transfer of a theatrical print. Amazon also sells a PD-looking disc which supposedly comes from "Itami Productions" that I've not seen reviewed. Doesn't look like something I'd want to take a chance on. If Itami's estate does hold the R1 rights, it seems like something Criterion would pounce on.Perkins Cobb wrote:Wonder if Criterion would pick up Tampopo

While this might be jumping the gun (with the possibility of yet another clue to be revealed today), these are my guesses for tomorrow's releases:
Hollis Frampton Box Set
Alambrista! (Young)
Y Tu Mama Tambien (Cuaron)
Harold & Maude (Ashby)
The Soft Skin (Truffaut)
Jules and Jim blu (Truffaut)
Royal Tenenbaums blu (Anderson)

I'm glad that a lot of Kinoshita's stuff is now on their hulu page but boy are they slacking on Yoshishige Yoshida.

Yeah but what we really need is for them to get a hold of some Tomu Uchida!

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Is Criterion the company with the R1 rights on Yoshida's films? A quick Amazon search reveals none of his films available on DVD, whereas several books come up, most notably his book on Ozu (in English translation) - which I'm reading right now and am having a great time with it.
Given the recent interest in Japanese new wave films, I'm surprised there isn't at least something of his out. How much of it is tied up in ATG?

I'm just hoping Chaplin's The Gold Rush is finally announced. I die a little every month that goes by without a Chaplin announcement. It has also been awhile since the last Japanese Eclipse set so I think we're about due.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
My pick is Odd Man Out. I have an feeling it's coming sooner rather than later. It is on Netflix instant - with a warning that it is to expire on Jan 16th. Plus, I had emailed Jon Mulvaney a few times and he has been mum on it. So maybe it'll be up on the Hulu page. If I am lucky, it'll get a mainline release.

Criterion's been pretty reliably two months ahead with its newsletter clues for awhile now. Meaning: Being John Malkovich should be announced today, and The Gold Rush next month.

It's official! I found this on the Criterion Facebook page:
I contacted a higher-up at Warner Brothers regarding the re-release of Badlands (will WB release it, or Criterion), and his response is this: "It most likely will be released by Criterion."

Sure, some person on Facebook cites an unnamed "higher-up" who still doesn't commit 100%. Where do I pre-order?
