Perhaps it's that Steven Bach, author of FINAL CUT, and erstwhile exec producer of the same died in 2009...cdnchris wrote:I was about to say I wouldn't expect anything from Cimino since he's dead, but hey, I look him up and he's still alive. If Criterion is going to do Heavens Gate they need to get F. X. Feeney to do one of commentaries. He's been a defender of this film for years. They also should have something on Z Channel's importance in showing the director's cut of the film.

From what I understand, work on the Heaven's Gate disc finished up over a year ago. Don't know what the holdup is; my guess is something political with MGM or an eccentric director.

I was unaware that Herzog's film did that well, but I also meant if he had to make a special camera to film 3-D at that low of an ISO then
it only seems fair that the film be released in 3-D and I don't know if Criterion is ready to do that yet.

A moot point, as it's already out in a 3D Blu-ray from MPI.

Cool, I didn't know Final Cut was also a documentary. I've had the book for years, so I'll have to check that out.

That's awesome. Makes what, only six of his films available? Would love for Pound and Moment to Moment to get releases too.

Isn't Putney Swope his 5th film, meaning we might see a mainline release of that in May with this Eclipse? A Eclipse release of Putney would be useless with that R1 dvd out with commentary.

Babo 73 is 57 minutes long, so if they count that as his first full length feature film, then Putney Swope is his fifth film.

Nope, even discounting his lost first film it's his sixth film. From what I understand of that announcement it would mean the set includes A Touch of Greatness, Babo 73, Sweet Smell of Sex, and Chafed Elbows.

Well good. So hopefully Putney is announced for the same month, unless they spread it out, like the Akerman releases.

I see A Touch of Greatness is listed as 54 minutes long on the IMDB. It is also listed as a short, which is why I assumed Babo 73 was his first feature film. (Shows what assuming gets you.)

They are all fairly short. I think together they make just barely over four hours.

FWIW, the Makavejev set is just over 3 1/2 hours.

Hopefully the short collective running times will convince Criterion to price this as a $45 set instead of $60.

I think that depends on if they decide to put more than 1 film per disc or not.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Pound looks amazing and seems to be in the same style as Greaser's Palace and Moment to Moment (i found a copy from a VHS movie house in LA- great flick) I saw it at film forum back in the day as well. I can't wait for this release. What's the word, still think Putney will be released separately? It totally deserves it. Also, I'd love to see Sticks and Stones, any news on that?

Considering Moonrise Kingdom open on May, should we expect another Anderson upgrade to coincide with the release?

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I would think not - Anderson did a podcast a couple of months ago in which he said he still needs to watch/approve the transfer for The Royal Tenenbaums. My guess is that it'll be another November release, with The Life Aquatic to follow next November.

Not to veer too much off topic but any chances we can see a Leos Carax box or any of his films in a decent release? Mauvais Sang is one of my favorite movies ever and since its been long out of print in R1, and not in a great DVD release at that, I would think that it would be a perfect Criterion pick up.

Les Amants du Pont Neuf seems like the obvious Carax selection. It's such a consummate 'movie movie' that I've never understood why it wasn't more widely adored.
The Artificial Eye collection of his other three features is pretty solid (and could make a tidy Eclipse).

You holding out? *taps baseball bat against palm of hand* *
*What on earth is the accurate description for that anyways? I see people doing it in movies all the time, in preparation for a fight, but I've never seen it written out.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Good to know, Jameson. That information was posted on another forum. I had assumed that Heaven's Gate, like Night of the Hunter, was one of the pet projects that John Kirk had started work on at MGM that had been squelched when new management came in and had just transferred over to Criterion. Here's hoping it's still on track for an eventual release. I know you can't share much, but thanks for setting that straight.Jameson281 wrote:That is incorrect.Jeff wrote:From what I understand, work on the Heaven's Gate disc finished up over a year ago.
