They'll make a main line set of the Groupe Dziga Vertov films. Released January 2018.domino harvey wrote:I don't understand. Criterion sat on these for fucking years only to make it an Eclipse set with no extras? What did they do with Gorin's contributions?swo17 wrote:Gorin set

Commentaries-- one for the Japanese and another for the American version. A double-shot of Kalat? I'm there, and I could care less about Godzilla!Jean-Luc Garbo wrote:Fuck yeah David Kalat: he's on commentary for Godzilla!

Susie Bright and Linda Williams on Belle de Jour? What is this, a women's studies class from 1990?

Absolutely seconded. One of Criterion's best contributors who, from what I understand, has already completed extras for these titles, and films that could really stand some additional context. Just wait until people see Poto and Cabengo and want to know what happened next. To be fair, I can't think of that many non-Gorin extras that would be available (audio of Cabaret Voltaire's 'Low Cool'?), but nevertheless a disappointment.domino harvey wrote:I don't understand. Godzilla would have been quite a surprise, regardless of what you think of the film, if they'd just sat on it until announcement day. The Month of Hints About the Same Film kind of ruined that.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I'm interested in this. I see they didn't carry over the other track from the DVD (can't recall at the moment who did it and too lazy to look it up) but I remember not thinking too highly of it so no big loss.Jean-Luc Garbo wrote:I'm glad they have Michael Wood doing a commentary because his book on the same was invaluable for me.
Also, can't say I'm too surprised about Frenzy not showing up. I'm pretty sure I'll see a Warner Bros. title licenced to Criterion before Universal ever lets go of a Hitchcock title.

The Julie Jones commentary from the Miramax DVD? One of the dullest commentaries in the history of the form. Makes you long for the scintillating wit and deep insight of Richard Schickel.cdnchris wrote:I'm interested in this. How I would have loved a feature on YSL's costumes for Deneuve. I mean, really, they are the most important supporting player in this film, and Bdj was the beginning of a professional and personal relationship that lasted decades. And don't get me started on those Roger Vivier pumps!

I have the Alliance DVD (which I assume was a port of the Miramax DVD) but yes, the commentary on that one was one of the most draining tracks I ever attempted to listen to.
Further evidence I am a nerd but that made me laugh.Makes you long for the scintillating wit and deep insight of Richard Schickel.

Surprised there's only one blugrade, and that it's Traffic, which I remember as deeply dull when I saw it.. but the rest of the releases sound great, and the Gorin is long-awaited..

Quityerbitchin. There may be fewer titles announced this month relative to other months, but they are some damn good titles and there should be something for everyone. The looooooooooong-awaited release of the Gorin set, a Traffic Blu-ray, two David Kalat commentary tracks, and what is sure to be a sumptuous Blu transfer of Belle de jour are all major cause for celebration.
I thinking all we ever heard was that Gorin was "working on" this set. Were there specific features mentioned? It could have just meant supervision of the transfers since he was likely working with Criterion on restoring his own personal elements.domino harvey wrote:I don't understand. Only Godzilla for me but my wallet won't mind after the November and December onslaught (good cover but not a patch on the BFI artwork).

There the Intermedio set of these that have fine transfers but are unfortunately not English-friendly. Subs exist on the internet, though...*CG* wrote:Don't joke about that please.Matt wrote:They'll make a main line set of the Groupe Dziga Vertov films. Released January 2018.
Also, pretty sure those Gorin transfers have been done for a few years, as a mutual friend had told me. I think they may even be on Janus Films' theatrical distribution list, but I'd have to re-check that at work to confirm. I did think they were remastered in HD, though....

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Everything looks to be essential for me this month but I'm most excited for Moment of Truth and the Gorins, neither of which I have seen before - a shame though that these will be the least feature packed of the releases (though I wait to see how long the Rosi interview will be).
