Second Tuesday at The Flea Pit

The next Second Run screening will take place on Tuesday 8th May 2007.

The film screened will be Jim McBride's 'My Girlfriend's Wedding'.

Jim McBride's documentary is a fascinating profile of his English girlfriend, Clarissa Ainley. With his camera almost entirely trained on her, McBride explores Clarissa's life and loves, her feelings about her parents and children, and documents her green card marriage to a man she has only known for a week. However, as the film progresses, the most revealing truths are about the person behind the camera.

Originally intended as a short, 'My Girlfriend's Wedding' is a fascinating record of a turbulent time and highlights the subjective nature of the filmmaking process. Rarely screened outside the US, this is a great opportunity to see the film.

“At the time I made it, I was fond of referring to it as a fiction film, because it was very much my personal idea of what Clarissa was like, and not at all an objective or truthful view.â€

Our next regular free film night takes place on Monday 10th November, at the Roxy Bar and Screen at London Bridge.

On that Monday we will be screening THE THIRD PART OF THE NIGHT, by one of the the true mavericks of European cinema, Andrzej Zulawski.

"Zulawski's first feature sets the tone for the rest of his career, walking a perpetual tightrope between the hallucinatory and the hysterical"
Sight & Sound
"A haunting first feature" Time Out

THE THIRD PART OF THE NIGHT (Trzecia czesc nocy) is his highly influential and award-winning debut feature. A nightmarish and surreal masterpiece, it is considered one of the best Polish films of the 1970s. Set during the Nazi-occupation of Poland and rich with multilayered symbolism and apocalyptic imagery, it shows one of Europe's most uncompromising and visionary directors at his best.

Second Run DVDs release of THE THIRD PART OF THE NIGHT is still the only DVD release of the film anywhere in the world.

Screening Details:
Monday 10th November - THE THIRD PART OF THE NIGHT (102 minutes)
Free entry (please buy a drink at the bar)
Film starts promptly at 8pm

Roxy Bar & Screen
128-132 Borough High Street
London SE1 1LB

I wish I lived in England. :( (not really, but it would be worth it for this screening)

There's a French release - but it's English-subtitle-less.

Apologies, dmk_world, and thanks for pointing that out. I should have said the only English-subtitled DVD release of the film. I think the French release happened a year or more after ours?

Marc Isaacs

#13 Post by Chris W » Wed Apr 29, 2009 5:01 am

From the Curzon Cinemas website:

Second Run Presents: Marc Isaacs Double Bill
Certificate: 18
Duration: 120
Plus Q&A with Marc Isaacs

Curzon Cinemas and Second Run DVD have teamed up to launch a new strand, Kinématheque, committed to presenting gems of world cinema followed by filmmaker discussions. For the first event we mark Second Run’s release of the films of Marc Isaacs, one of the most important contemporary UK documentary filmmakers. Filming alone, Isaacs develops a close and revealing bond with his subjects. His characters’ (and our) prejudices are challenged by the reality he finds. The results are deeply moving, idiosyncratic views of modern Britain

Lift (cert tbc)
Director: Marc Isaacs. UK 2001. 25 mins

Encouraged by the acclaimed director Pawel Pawlikowski, Isaac’s debut is a window into the lives of people in a London high-rise council block. Sitting with his camera for days inside the tower block’s lift, the result is a gripping and humorous portrait of a ‘vertical’ multicultural community. Winner of Grierson Award and BAFTA Award Nominee for Best Newcomer 2002.

Followed by

Calais: The Last Border (cert tbc)
Director: Marc Isaacs. UK 2003. 60 mins

Calais is now an index of global economic and social realities. Isaacs weaves various portraits into a moving overview of a place defined by the island it gazes at across the Channel. Winner of Best Documentary, Berlin Film Festival 2003.

SECOND RUN GOES TO LEEDS...…
We are delighted to be screening our films at the 23rd Leeds International Film Festival, which runs from 4 - 22 November.

The Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday 4th November and Second Run have been asked to present a very special Festival Opening Night event at the Howard Assembly Rooms:
DAISIES, Věra Chytilová's 1966 classic of surrealist cinema, will be screened with a live improvised soundtrack performed by the band Monkey See Monkey Do.
Monkey See Monkey Do are a Leeds-based group who create all their music spontaneously, making each performance a totally unique event, and have performed at Club nights and events around the UK and Europe. Having performed a live soundtrack to our 'Valerie and Her Week of Wonders' at the 2008 Green Man Festival, we have now asked them to turn their attention to DAISIES, incorporating jazz, electronics and sound effects to augment this unique film. http://www.monkeyseemonkeydouk.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The full schedule of Second Run screenings at the Festival are:
Screenings at the Howard Assembly Rooms (as part of the Cinema Versa strand):
Wed 4 Nov, 9pm - DAISIES (Sedmikrásky) with a live improvised soundtrack by Monkey See Monkey Do.
Thu 5 Nov, 6.30pm - THE THIRD PART OF THE NIGHT (Trzecia część nocy) dir. Andrzej Żuławski, Poland 1971.

Sat 7 Nov, 4.30pm - DAISIES (Sedmikrásky) dir. Věra Chytilová, Czechoslovakia 1966. This second screening is without the live soundtrack accompaniment.

Screening at The Carriageworks (as part of the Cherry Kino strand):
Tue 10 Nov, 7.30pm - BLACK SUN dir. Gary Tarn, UK 2005.

The Festival website is at http://www.leedsfilm.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . Our films appear within the Cinema Versa/Cherry Kino programme sections. Passes and Tickets can be bought online and also through the Box Office on 0113 224 3801.

Just posted here as well, from the DIARY thread:

SPECIAL EVENT SCREENING

DIARY FOR MY CHILDREN
SUNDAY 22nd NOVEMBER, AT 2.15 PM – RENOIR CINEMA, LONDON

Márta Mészáros’ highly praised film receives a rare screening in London at this special Kinēmatheque event and we hope to welcome her and Éva Pataki (renowned co-writer of two of the films in the DIARY trilogy) to the screening.

"DIARY is one of Mészaros' most accomplished films: subtle, yet incredibly haunting, its combination of the personal and the political has lost none of its emotional resonance in the years since its release" - DVD Outsider

We hope to see you at the screening.
Early booking is recommended and tickets can be booked at http://www.curzoncinemas.com/whats_on/r" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... a_meszaros or by calling 0871 703 3991.

*STOP PRESS*

The lucky people of California (well, LA and its surrounds at least) have the wonderful opportunity during February to see many of our fave Czech films - in fact, they are all films which we have released on DVD - on the big screen on 35mm!

The season is called Czech Your Head and has been put together by the Cinefamily at the beautiful Silent Movie Theater and runs on every Saturday during February.
This Saturday 13th is extra-special because Ivan Passer will attend and introduce the screening of his sublime INTIMATE LIGHTING.

All the details can be found here (and, yes, it says a 35mm screening of MARKETA LAZAROVA too!). Hurry.
http://cinefamily.org/calendar/saturday_early.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I can't tell you how jealous we are of all you Angelinos. Please please go and see the films and let us know what happened at the screenings. And tell them about Second Run. And tell Mr Passer how much we love his film.

You don’t have to leave London to avoid THAT wedding on Friday 29th!

Delighted to let you know that you have a rare opportunity to experience, in the hallowed spaces of a church in Bethnal Green, a Friday night of nuns, exorcism and faith, all presented in the most wonderful film by Polish master Jerzy Kawalerowicz –
MOTHER JOAN OF THE ANGELS (Matka Joanna od aniolow), made in 1961 but still a very uniquely strange and beautiful film.

This screening is part of the excellent East End Film Festival and has been programmed by the good folks there.

Screening details: Friday 29th April - MOTHER JOAN OF THE ANGELS (plus a short introduction) starts at 8.30pm
Venue: St. John on Bethnal Green Church, 200 Cambridge Heath Road, London E2 9PA (By tube: Bethnal Green)

Festival website: http://www.eastendfilmfestival.com/inde ... od_aniolo/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
To book tickets: http://www.wegottickets.com/eeff" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Luminous images, writhing nuns and bit of self-flaggelation - what more could you want on a bank holiday? Hope to see you there.
