Gary doesn't mention it in detail, but I can thoroughly recommend David Sorfa's new booklet essay - as with the transfer (in fact, even more so), it's night and day compared with the rather skimpy piece that accompanied the original release.

And with regard to the transfer, it's extraordinarily unlikely that Second Run would have gone to the expense (and the gamble) of reissuing it if the new master hadn't been a drastic improvement! But it's nice to see absolutely cast-iron side-by-side evidence.

I'm not really sure how to answer that, except to say that it's a perfectly fair representation of what the intro looks like (or at least one of the bits without film clips).

There wasn't anything in the mug - it was a prop designed to add a splash of colour.

I think we may have had lunch on that table shortly before filming started, though.

Yes, they took ages to light it properly. In fact, they were so obsessive about getting that right that we ran out of time for the rest, so I just recorded a couple of hundred of the most frequently used words and a handful of syllables and Polish names and let them put it together in the editing room. They did an amazingly seamless job, all things considered.

To be fair, they're only going from that frame grab - they won't have seen the spectacular CGI bit in the middle when they suddenly leap up in the air and start whirling round my head.

I love the way that I got blamed for the "subliminal marketing" and Second Run got let off the hook!

For the record, that wasn't my flat, those weren't my DVDs, and I'm nowhere near as convinced as he is that their presence on camera was accidental.

My eyes wandered over there after a few minutes after being dazzled by the multi-coloured mug. Can't actually remember whether there were a pile of CDs in there or not, but there was no chance of deciphering any of the titles anyway. Haven't watched the film in full yet, but delighted with the clips I saw in the intro. Looks like a superb restoration, and I hope my local library knows about this and replaces their old, decrepit version with the new one.

Its not the first time said DVD stack has appeared on film. Check the Peter Strickland's introduction to Szindbad.

Second Run should make it like a game: Have the interviewee pick several of their favorite titles from the catalog, and place them in a stack in an only somewhat inconspicuous area of the camera range. :D

(Just to clarify, I didn't claim that Kawalerowicz specifically had seen Black Narcissus, just that it was possibly - indeed, probably - the only example of genuine nunsploitation that the Poles would have had a chance to have seen prior to Mother Joan: it was definitely released over there because there's a famous Polish poster by Henryk Tomaszewski.)
