Story of My Death
(Història de la meva mort)
A film by Albert Serra
Spain, 2013
Award-winning Catalan filmmaker Albert Serra established himself as one of the most original and iconoclastic voices in contemporary cinema.
His deliciously eccentric 2013 film The Story of My Death (winner of the prestigious Golden Leopard prize at the 2013 Locarno Film Festival) imagines a meeting between the ageing Casanova and Count Dracula to chart the collision between the eighteenth century of Enlightenment, rationalism and libertine sensuality and a nineteenth century founded upon Romanticism, obscurantism and violence.
"Story of My Death is a singular work, and its originality is apparent in every frame... This is a film of dazzling vitality and animation"
Village Voice
"Story of My Death is a truly esoteric and unique work, something contemporary, yet totally free of constraints of time and space. The trappings might be historical and mythical, but [Serra's] playground is cinematic language"
CinemaScope
"Vivaciously minimalist but visually breathtaking, it's a rarefied cinematic luxury"
Melbourne International Film Festival

Have mercy. I might just have to go and purchase all the titles I've been slacking on just to say thanks.

The Skinny"While other artists seek to find order in chaos, Serra revels in the anarchy, and has crafted a fittingly facetious monument to the cyclical nature of art"

DVD Beaver"Texturally beautiful... recalls Werner Herzog's remake of NOSFERATU. The film might not be for everyone, but the images and sound design should prove hypnotic to the cinéaste...
THE STORY OF MY DEATH looks gorgeous"

The Arts Desk"An hypnotic encounter of sensuality and darkness... a bewitching, slow-burn piece that delights in the painterly quality of many of its visuals, particularly those that shade towards night, with a sound score that’s almost a character in itself."

STORY OF MY DEATH reviewed by David Jenkins in the latest Little White Lies magazine"Leave the weighty shakles of rational thought at the door when entering the playfully phantasmagoric world of Albert Serra's sublime STORY OF MY DEATH...
This Second Run DVD emulates the clash of modern and antiquated techniques in its gorgeous transfer"
