I'll say it: I'm stoked. Rat Trap was a major discovery for me, and I've been itching to see more of Gopalakrishnan's films ever since.

L K Weston at Cine Outsider
Man of the Story can be sold on Adoor's considerable reputation alone, but it can also be sold on the fact that it’s a deftly-crafted and incredibly powerful film that’s a true landmark, both in Adoor's career and film culture as a whole. An essential purchase.

Very nice film.
Though the last 1/4 dragged a bit.
And the dubbing, especially for crying scenes, wasn't great.
A very lived-in sort of film with some great scenery.
Very much in the Satyajit Ray tradition.

Not as good as his superb later film Shadow Kill, but certainly makes me want to see more Gopalakrishnan films. I see Second Run has also put out Rat Trap. Will have to get that.
Any other Gopalakrishnan's available on Dvd?

I get that Indian cinema is always a major risk, but this film deserves some major love. I haven't seem Gopalakrishnan's other films but this is really a magnificent work up there with the best I've seen from the country. Just the way the camera and structure works to turn this ordinary story into an intimate fairy tale is enough to put it ahead of the class, but just about everything concerning the film hit the right spot (for me). Honestly one of SR's best.
