Flicker Alley

#701 Post by TMDaines » Wed Oct 29, 2014 7:03 pm

If you're gonna go to the trouble of ripping the discs , (many may feel that) you may as well just cut out the middle man and download it off the net.

The value for me in DVDs and Blu-rays is having a properly packaged and prepared product in physical form: it's the extra value that labels deliver on top of the film itself that make them worth buying.

I think rights's holders (and/or labels – if they will even exist in the purely digital age) are in for a rude awakening if they expect that the general consumer is going to be willing to pay the current rates to download or rent a film digitally.

God help us, they've reached their goal. Their new stretch goal is for $2000 more they'll put PDFs of the liner notes for each original DVD online for the purchaser to download. Is someone's grandma running this thing?

Maybe the next stretch goals beyond that could be original trailers in RealPlayer format and access to a members-only Yahoo! chat room.

FrauBlucher, back in February wrote:UPCOMING RELEASES:
5. The Albatros serial The House of Mystery (1923), directed by Alexandre Volkoff, and starring Julien Vilandrit (Ivan Mosjoukine). A Flicker Allery/Blackhawks Films presentation. DVD edition.
Decided to ask about this one, as it appears to have been repeatedly delayed. Josh from Flicker Alley says
We do still have HOUSE OF MYSTERY on deck. Pre-production is taking a little longer than expected, but we hope to have it out by mid-2015.
Heck, I'd pay for CD-Rs with MKV files of this one, so I'm pretty pleased with the confirmation.

Kean is incredible, so, yes, bring on the Volkoff!

RobertB wrote:Just came back from a screening of Gance´s j'accuse. It was a 2K scan from Lobster and Flicker Alley based on the 2008 restoration. English intertitles, unless where they are artistic. This seems ready for a blu-ray release. The old dvd looks like it's out of print. How many more silent-film gems does Flicker have that they can release without warning?
This would be more appropriate on the (non-existent) Lobster Films thread, but they have already a Blu-ray/DVD combo of J'Accuse up for order on their site.

Does Olive still own the rights to the 1938 remake of "J'Accuse"?

DVDBeaver on "Cinerama Seven Wonders Of The World

So Flicker Alley decided to not put lossless audio on this title, and they still want $10 more than the previous Cinerama releases?

I suspect the price increase is due to the DVD part of the combo going from 1 Disc to 2 Discs.

$10 from changing flipper discs to 2 singles? Not justified...

If you're in the New York area, it's not too late to get tickets for our 3-D FUNHOUSE presentation at MoMA. It's part of the 12th International Festival of Preservation.

You'll be seeing a 15 minute sneak preview of 3-D RARITIES, due for release on blu-ray by Flicker Alley in June 2015.

Don't miss it!

Does anybody has their Discount Code yet ? I don't want to suscribe to their newsletter / Twitter / Whatever just for this, but clearly, I won't pass on the Chaplin (and most likely the Matt Sennett) set at this price.

Also, does anybody knows if FA shop is Customs friendly ? Because it remains expensive stuff to import...

10% discount with the Ciber-Monday FLICKERFANS code to be used at checkout. And yes, on my previous purchases they were 'customs friendly'...

Today's Flicker Alley newsletter hints at an upcoming Chaplin Essanay collection. Fingers crossed that it comes with a nice, thick link to a pdf file!

This sounds tantalizing:
Flicker Alley Newsletter wrote:The upcoming Blu-ray/DVD collection MASTERWORKS OF AMERICAN AVANT-GARDE EXPERIMENTAL FILM 1920-1970 gathers 30 films made by vanguard artists that defined new arenas of cinematic engagement. The official release date for the collection will be announced soon.
Meshes of the Afternoon will be one of the films included.

Any other films known to be on there? An Andelusian Dog would have to be one of them, no?

Probably no since the title suggests this is American cinema only. Not European.

That was announced as coming soon almost a year ago, so it's a relief to know it's still in the works.

HOUSE OF MYSTERY coming 31/03/2015. At 6 1/2 hours long it's being spread over 3 DVDs and has a score by Neil Brand. I've pre-ordered already. \:D/

The MOD collection has gone live. The notes are available free of charge if you highlight MOD at the top of the screen and then click Critical Essays.

Is JOAN THE WOMAN available in a good edition anywhere else?

I have to admit to also being tempted by that Humphrey Jennings set. As superb as I'm sure the BFI's releases are, I'm never going to buy 3 blu-rays of the stuff, so one mid-priced release of his major work (including the longer FIRE cut) is... more up my alley.
