Except their release dates are notoriously unreliable, always being multiply put back, delayed etc... More annoying than serious... Other fly in the ointment is that they've made some silly mistakes on previous releases... See www.Nostalghia.com for the saga of some of the Tarkovsky releases...

Upside is that they have an excellent catalogue.... Coming in 2005 (postponed several times) are Robert Bresson's "A Man Escaped", "Le Diable Probablement" and "Lancelot du Lac". "L'Argent" which they release on VHS, should also be probably added at some stage...

In the London Film Festival catalogue 2004 AE advertise forthcoming additions to the DVD collection as, 'Rohmer's "Tales of 4 Seasons", Loach's "Land and Freedom", Dreyer's "Passion of Joan of Arc", Pialat's "Van Gogh", Feuillade's "Van Gogh, Jarman's "The Garden", and a collection of titles from Bresson (including "A Man Escaped"), Fassbinder (including "Veronika Voss"), Satyajit Ray (including "Days and Nights in the Forest") and Angelopoulos (including "The Travelling Players" & "Eternity and a Day")'....

I just got their Jean Vigo double-disc set and I'm pretty pleased. The prints aren't pristine, but they're certainly good enough for me - and you can't beat getting his entire oeuvre in one set!

It's great to hear all that but the one title from their VHS catalog i miss most on DVD would be Jean Eustache's "La maman et la putain". That was my most watched VHS a couple of years ago...

Bring it on AE !

It's probably somewhere on the old forum, but are all of the supplements from the French Vigo set carried over to the UK one?

Don't know about the French release, but the UK one has "Filmmakers of Our Times: Jean Vigo", "The Voyages of L'Atalante", a sound restoration piece, Otar iosseliani interview, Vigo bibliography, stills & poster gallery, and some Taris newsreels. Haven't had a chance to check them out yet, though.

Here's a reply email I received about the upcoming Satyajit Ray's titles:

Quote:
Many thanks for your inquiry. Yes, we are planning on releasing Days and Nights... and the Chess Players. You will be pleased to know that we are also releasing Devi and Three Daughters as well. I;m afraid at this point that we don't have release dates as of yet or details of any extras. Please refer to our website for up to date release information.

All best wishes,

Fantastic news! I'm yearning for more Ray ever since I saw the Apu trilogy and more recently, The Music Room. If ever there was a master storytelling, he definitely deserves that accolade. Such poetry, such delicate feelings, wonderful, simply wonderful!

Why doesn't the list of the Ray titles include "Charulata"? Isn't it one of his better films?

Yes, HISTOIRE(S) DU CINEMA was listed as a forthcoming AE release in the 12th (2004) Time Out Film Guide...

However it will be a daunting task to attempt to subtitle the various overlaid audio and visual texts. Plus there may be problems with clearing the rights of the constituent clips... When originally parts of the HISTOIRE(S) were broadcast on UK Channel 4, the legal loophole was that Godard was said to be 'quoting' from other works, and thus clips did not have to be individually cleared unless they representated a substantial or significant part of the quoted work... (See Colin MacCabe's 'Godard')... I wonder if AE could get away with this approach on a DVD release...

Yes, but that doesn't mean that they would have print availability for a DVD release. And you can say that about still too many titles from other directors that are seriously MIA.

I was going to tape this when it screened on TCM a couple years back. Does anyone remember how it was subtitled there? That might give an indication of how it could be handled. There is a DVD box set of this available in Japan which has selectable Japanese-only subtitles.

So, according to MovielMail, Silence Between Two Thoughts is to be released on March 26th 2005. Does this mean Payami is actually getting the negative back from the government?

I can hardly wait to watch this because I find Secret Ballot immensely moving. I hope Artificial Eye also gets to release One More Day...

Did anyone else feel that the subtitles on L'ATALANTE left a bit to be desired -- seemed a bit sparse in places, with some dialogue left completely untranslated.

I picked up one stupid mistranslation on the Rozier documentary, where the subtitles tell us that an ancestor of the original scriptwriter "ordered a frigate" called 'L'Atalante'. Should have been "commanded a frigate", of course. On that basis, maybe there are other errors that I didn't notice...

I'd agree with that.

Rohmer's Four Seasons appears to be slated for 28 March 2005 (notice on DVDBeaver.com; advertised on amazon.co.uk).

Anyone has any particulars for this release?

I want to scream: I bought the Green Ray yesterday. :(

The Green Ray is the last film in the Comedies et Proverbes serie, and not part of Four seasons.

Thanks for the correction - of course the American title (Summer) had me confused. Hope the AE Four Seasons release does not get caught up in this company's habit of postponing & re-postponing.

correction to the correction!

The Green Ray is the 5th of 6 films in the Comedies and proverbs series, the last is L'Ami de mon amie (Boyfriends and Girlfriends).

Play.com are listing some nice extras for AE's forthcoming Pickpocket disc:

Special Features:
Interview with Robert Bresson
The Models of Pickpocket - interviews with Martin Lassalle, Marika Green and Pierre Leymarie
Around Pickpocket - discussion with Marika Green, Jean-Pierre Améris and Paul Vecchiali. Kassagi cabaret performance
Trailer

Hopefully it will be the full-length feature Models Of Pickpocket.

12.99 at Bensonsworld, and they acknowledge that the list price is 22.99 too, so I don't know what's going on there.
