Huh! I'm anxious to see how Beat the Devil will look. It says earlier in the thread that this company has D.O.A. as well, which is one of my favorite films. Hopefully these films will look handsome in hi-definition.

Re: The Film Detective
Today is the release day for the Beat the Devil Blu-ray. I just received my copy from Amazon and immediately viewed it.
I had never seen the film before and found that it was a fun (and funny) film noir spoof. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
There was someone on the Blu-ray.com forum who received their copy yesterday and declared the transfer dreadful:
Although I cannot be absolutely sure, the disc appears to be a BD-R with a characteristic inky blue/black sheen.
Oddly, there is no mention of today's release of this title on The Film Detective's Facebook page.

I felt the image could be greatly improved but was not at all as bad as described and in most cases very much sharper than a DVD transfer. The quality in all respects is no better than, and some ways inferior to, past DVD editions I have seen and had.

Re: The Film Detective
Now that they (finally) released their first three BDs, they have announced the following for 10/20/15:
The Bat (1959)
A Bucket of Blood (1959)
They've stated they are sourced from 35mm and will be their proper widescreen.

Yeah, it's by no means a quality remaster, but it looks far better than any DVD edition I've ever seen or owned. Closeups are especially good, and the sound is better than on any edition I've seen.

Re: The Film Detective
Using original poster art is nice and all, but could they at least try to photoshop the creases out? Or find an unfolded poster?

Re: The Film Detective

Erm, isn't there quite a bit of boosting? I feel like it's so obvious I don't need to point it out, but look at the paper wrapping and Dick's upturned face in the next still - massive loss of detail.Gary T wrote:(perhaps a tinge of brightness boosting)

The creases may be the least-worst part of that Only Angels cover.

DVD Beaver reviews The Red House
I was happy to see it in 1080P without DNR marring the presentation.
Great flic - I could watch it again right now. Keep up the efforts Film Detective
(stop the BD-R'ing though) - your modest package does have value and there
are fans who appreciate the attempts at authenticity.

DVD Beaver reviews The Terror (Roger Corman, 1963)
Blu-ray.com's review generally agrees with Gary Toonze comparison:
The egregious DNR in the HD Cinema is not present on the Film Detective Blu-ray release. The new transfer is also more robust - has a max'ed out bitrate and is probably as good as this source can look in 1080P. Those sensitive to digital manipulation will prefer this newer Blu-ray, which still looks thick and heavy but crisper than the overly-digitized HD Cinema rendering. The Film Detective release is in the original 1.85:1 aspect ratio (not the bastardized 1.78:1.)
Blu-ray.com's review generally agrees with Gary Toonze comparison:
The same comparison reveals the full extent of the DNR applied to HD Cinema Classics' Blu-ray, resulting in the elimination of the film's natural grain and the removal of texture and fine detail. A release print will never be able to supply the level of detail that can be derived from a camera negative or IP, but TFD's edition of The Terror supplies a noticeably more film-like image. The downside is that print damage, in the form of white speckles and other dirt artifacts, are more noticeable (although the print is in pretty good condition). Color values are roughly the same in this version, but some of the darker shots reveal a slight uptick in contrast.

Any American old enough to remember will never forget where they were and what they were doing when the Giant Van Heflin attacks took place.

Suddenly (1954) on 10/25. Unlike the previous two US BD PD releases by other companies this will be a 1.75 presentation rather than open matte 1.37

BEAT THE DEVIL
Directed by John Huston
Starring Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones and Gina Lollobrigida
Screenplay by Truman Capote
NEW 4K RESTORATION
THE UNSEEN COMPLETE, UNCENSORED VERSION!
(1953) “They’re desperate characters. Not one of them looked at my legs.” Suave Humphrey Bogart (“Fat Gut’s my best friend, and I will not betray him cheaply”) and tea-and-crumpet-loving wife Gina Lollobrigida (“Emotionally, I am English”), en route to a “uranium deal” in East Africa – with “business associates” including Robert Morley and Peter Lorre – meet up with a congenital liar, blonde Jennifer Jones (her hair dying irked on-set hubby David O. Selznick) – and then after there’s this shipwreck, an Arab official demands details about his beloved... Rita Hayworth. Supposedly scripted by Truman Capote as they went along, Devil so baffled its preview audiences that it was instantly cut (by four minutes, including some censorship excisions) and re-edited, with an added Bogart narration turning the whole thing into a flashback – which made it all the more baffling. Seen for decades only in that mangled version – and in dismal bootleg copies yet – this new restoration went back to the original 35mm camera negative and other sources to re-create the unseen longer version. Based on the novel by James Helvick (pen name of Claud Cockburn). DCP restoration. Approx. 89 mins.
Restored by Sony Pictures Entertainment in collaboration with The Film Foundation, with the support of RT Features and the Franco-American Cultural Fund. Audio restoration by Deluxe Media Audio Services. Image restoration by L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory
