Koch Media (Germany)

#1 Post by Frankinho007 » Fri Mar 25, 2011 3:41 pm

Is a medium-sized German company that releases a handful of catalog titles every month and usually they offer great quality. Koch has a good reputation for their Western releases: US and Spaghettis. They do have an ongoing Film Noir line as well. I won't post titles here, that have been released as R1 discs as well.

In March, they released:

Western Legenden line

Rio Conchos
From Hell to Texas (Schieß zurück, Cowboy!)

and Giorgio Capitani's Ognuno per sé (The Ruthless Four) (Das Gold von Sam Cooper)(1968). The disc features the English dub and English subtitles for scenes, missing in the English dub.

In April they'll release:

The Secret War of Harry Frigg (Der Etappenheld) (1968)

In May we'll see:

The Shadow (Shadow und der Fluch des Khan) (1995) in 1,85:1 on DVD and Blu-ray.

In June, they'll release as part of the Western Legenden series:

Yellow Sky (Herrin der toten Stadt) (1948) on DVD and probably on Blu-ray, as well.
Black Bart (Die schwarze Maske) (1948)

Don't forget that Koch are also at least distributing Spirit Media's excellent "Schätze des deutschen Tonfilms" series, for which we have a thread here.

In case anyone's curious, Rio Conchos is being released in R1 by Shout in June. Harry Frigg is stuck in MGM MOD Hell in R1, though, so that's a good bet

Frankinhoo7, are there any English-friendly German review sites that might cover the Koch BRs closer to release? I'm keen to hear what the Ox-Bow Incident Blu is like once it's out.

None, that I'm aware of. This site does HD comparisons but I don't know whether they'll check the two Wellmans once they're out.

Black Bart (Die schwarze Maske) (1948)
These releases are numbered and come in beautiful digibook packaging.

From Blu-ray.com:
German distributors Koch Entertainment are preparing for Blu-ray release two classic westerns by William A. Wellman: The Ox-Bow Incident (1943), starring Henry Fonda, Dana Andrews, Mary Beth Hughes, and Anthony Quinn, and Yellow Sky (1948), starring Gregory Peck, Anne Baxter, and Richard Widmark. The two Blu-ray releases will be part of the company's new Western Legends in HD series.
Preliminary special features:
Yellow Sky
* Original theatrical trailer
* Radio excerpt with Gregory Peck
* Gallery with stills from the shooting of the film, photos, and more.
The Ox-Bow Incident
* Original theatrical trailer
* Audio commentary by Dick Eulain and William Wellman, Jr.
* Henry Fonda: Hollywood's Quiet Hero
* Photo gallery
* Booklet

Street date for the two releases is August 26th.
From Stanton, member of Spaghetti-western.net forum:
They have bought the rights for about 12 SWs to release in a new collection. Probably later this year.
They plan not to sell it in all the usual ways. Not in shops, but only internet and what we call in Germany a "Börse", which is something like a swap market with regular sellers of new DVDs.
This is very bad news for fans for whom Amazon.de is the only option :oops: .

Thanks, DJvaso - great news indeed. Did a pre-order on both of them on Amazon. Haven't bought one of their Western series DVDs yet - can you give your overall opinion on them if you happen to own some of them?

From their Western Legenden DVD series I own The Last Wagon (No. 3), Rio Conchos (No. 5) and From Hell to Texas (No. 6). Apart from not having that many bonus features their releases are of high quality and I can recommend them all.

Koch Media will not only release these 12 rumored Italian Western through mailorders and "Börsen" but several other Italian flicks, as well. They semi-announced Paura in città (1976), Un tranquillo posto di campagna (A Quiet Place in the Country) (1969) and A ciascuno il suo (We still kill the old Way) (1967) as forthcoming titles.

Argento's Inferno will be distributed by Koch Media. Camera Obscura was intended to release the the title through a joint venture with Koch as a right holder but this won't happen. The disc with bonus material is produced by Camera Obscura.
