Hi jbeall,

I regret that you feel I have been unhelpful. Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to discuss my unhelpfulness at this time. However, rest assured that once I am able to be of more help, I will strive to help you to the best of my ability. I am very excited about the help that I will be offering you, at an unspecified time in the near to distant future. In the meantime, here is a drawing of a seahorse that I made. What do you think of it?

I hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Jon Mulvaney

I got a press release and revised sell-sheet from Criterion today. The supplements (and third disc) are back, and the price is staying reduced to $39.95! It has been updated on the Criterion site too.
email from Tamara wrote:We are changing the SRP on this title from $49.95 to $39.95. Sales information is below and a revised sell sheet is attached.

Title: Science Is Fiction: 23 Films by Jean Painlevé

CAT: CC1805D
UPC: 7-15515-04491-2
ISBN: 978-1-60465-144-7
SRP: $39.95
Prebook: 3/24/09
Street date: 4/21/09

Jean Painlevé was a film director, critic, theorist, and animator, yet his interests and studies also extended to mathematics, medicine, and zoology. Amazingly, all these disparate strands came together in a groundbreaking, decades-spanning artistic career. Operating under the credo “Science is fiction,” Painlevé forged his own unique cinematic path, creating countless short films for both the viewing public and the scientific community. Moreover, he was also one of the first filmmakers to take his camera underwater. Surreal, otherworldly documents of marine life, these films transformed sea horses, octopi, and mollusks into delicate dancers in their own floating ballets. This anthology features twenty-three of Painlevé’s shorts in their original form, as well as Yo La Tengo’s ninety-minute original score The Sounds of Science, written in 2001 to accompany eight of the director’s films.

THREE-DISC SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES:

- New, restored digital transfers
- The Sounds of Science, an original score by Yo La Tengo to Jean Painlevé’s films, plus an interview with the band
- More than two hours of interviews with the filmmaker, drawn from the eight-part television series Jean Painlevé au fils de ses films, directed by Denis Derrien and Hélène Hazera
- New and improved English subtitle translations
- PLUS: A booklet featuring a new essay by film scholar Scott MacDonald and notes on all the films by Painlevé

Wait, so the only thing that's changing is the price?

What a rollercoaster. This was a buy, then a must not buy, now it's a MUST buy. Way to go on restoring the extras, Criterion.

Indeed. It's a huge relief! Sorry to be repetitive, but I want to make sure that if anyone from Criterion is reading this they know how appreciated this move is.

According to Criterion's site, the booklet no longer has notes on all the films by Painlevé.

How is this omission any more reliable than the previous one which turned out to be false?

It's still not back up on the site, but it was in the updated specs email that Tamara sent out yesterday.

Criterion Collection wrote:Title: Seahorses are Fun: 23 minutes film by John Raisingbread

John Raisingbread was a janitor, fast-food dish washer, human being and best friend of some guy at Criterion, yet his interests and studies also extended to video games, beer, and seahorses. Amazingly, all these disparate strands came together in a groundbreaking, minutes-spanning artistic career. Operating under the credo “Seahorses are Fun” Raisingbread forged his own unique cinematic path, creating countable minutes of films for both the viewing public and I don't know who else. Moreover, he was also one of the many filmmakers to take his camera in front of his aquarium. Real, unworthy document of marine life, this film transformed sea horses, beer, and that little thing that spawn bubbles into delicate dancers in their own floating ballets. This anthology features twenty-three minutes of Raisingbread’s short in it's original form, as well as Simon & Garfunkel’s three-minute original song The Sounds of Silence, written in 1964, to accompany the film cuz it's a groovy song.

THREE-DISC SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES:

- New, restored digital transfers straight from the original mini-DV
- The Sounds of Silence, an original song by Simon & Garfunkel, plus a YouTube clip of them we found
- More than two hours of bloopers, drawn from the films of Jackie Chan
- New and improved seahorse-language subtitle translations
- PLUS: A booklet chronicling all the changes we made to make this boxset a must buy
Price: Thirty twelve dollars

I've been looking for a listing of the films included on the BFI release, but no luck. I understand the Criterion release will include many more films....so I'm assuming the films on the BFI release will likely be included. Anyone know which those were?

No, they're not in the booklet. They don't appear to be text features on the discs, either.

Having never seen any of these films, just by the titles listed above, this seems like it is going to be a very interesting set. I'm pretty excited. Hopefully Amazon gets it shipped out quickly once it is in stock.
