The 2 DVDs werent especially full but were still combining 11.5 Gb of data. It's thus surprising now to try and cram this into 1 DVD only, but MPEG2 encoding skills might have improved enough in the meantime.

Isn't the Blu-Ray by Artificial Eye better than the poor Gaumont HD transfer ? I can't find a test of this title at blu-ray.com whereas it is on the Louis Malle A.Eye box set.

I hope that like - let's say - Band à Part, Criterion will get a pre-DNR transfer. At least if the Artificial Eye turned out to be better than the Gaumont, there's good hopes....
oops, there's a blu-ray test of the Artificial Eye blu-ray and it's an improvement over the Gaumont BR (so there's hope for a good Criterion picture quality) : "Curzon/Artificial Eye's new release of Elevator to the Gallows is sourced from the same restored master that Gaumont prepared and used a few years ago, but the technical presentation is vastly superior." Going to be difficult to overlook the AE set when it is £20-30 so. Pretty much 10 films for the price of a Criterion or two. 2 films and extras versus 2 films + 8 bonus films.

The Artificial Eye UK and Gaumont France Blu-rays have the film in open matte 1.37:1, while the Criterion will retain the 1.66:1 ratio as was the older DVD edition.

I highly recommend the Blu-ray of Miles Davis' score presented in lossless stereo. Although I'm not sure if it's out of print or not. Seems hard to find suddenly.

Hasn't this been restored in a 4K scan recently in Europe? Why reissue listing is 2K?

I'm not a huge fan of the film, but the score is definitely one of the greats. Any Miles Davis fan needs to own a copy.

is this artwork an audio Blu-Ray ?

oh I didn't notice the 1:66 ratio... [-o< since the A.Eye used the same Gaumont transfer but "untempered" without the abrasive DNR and better encoding, I understand now if the ratio (1:66 vs 1:37 open-matte) is different why Criterion will probably use a different restoration (perhaps an old one (X2) like Le Samouraï ?)

I really hope that they still own the rights for "Murmur Of The Heart" which is probably my favorite Louis Malle.
The Artificial Eye box set has an interesting price, but some transfers are really poor (Atlantic City, or the bad restoration of "Lacombe Lucien" with this typical altered greenish-yellowish color settings (which was another one of my favorite Louis Malle movie))

Yes, Blu-ray Audio with all the tracks from the original album plus alternate takes. There is no video content, with three audio tracks: LPCM 2.0 stereo, dts-HD MA 2.0 stereo, Dolby TrueHD 2.0 stereo, all at 96khz.

It comes with a booklet in English and French plus a download code for an MP3 and high res audio versions.

Would have preferred 1.37:1, myself. 1.66:1 seems way too tight some of the time.

Your caps are bad representations of those scenes, those aren't lock off shots and indicate nothing just because you selectively freeze framing a moving camera or moving actors. I just watched it in 1.66 and the framing is excellent

on the DVD copy I have (1:66 ratio) the credits are in 1:37 (looks like an open-matte) - what was the original ratio for the theatrical release when this movie came out ?

I also remember that Murmur of The Heart (he ratio 1:66 is sure) has also the same kind of opening with a different ratio...

I have been keeping an eye out on this site for the review of the new CC disc. Is it coming soon? Ever since the question about the proper ratio came up, once attention has been called, I find it extremely distracting to watch the 1.66 and very hard to believe it's supposed to be seen like that. The post above by fred holywell, in my opinion, actually gives a good representation of what one fells throughout the film.
