I think it will really depend on what kind of child you have. I know that if I saw the film when I was four, I would've been frightened by it (keep in mind I refused to watch The Empire Strikes Back for the longest time because Luke's hand was cut off, so I wasn't a kid with a strong stomach for intense scenes). But I do think there are plenty of kids who might also get something out of the film (like your daughter BWilson, whose reaction to the Beast's transformation at the end was identical to mine as a matter of fact!).

If I ever end up having kids, I think I'll show them both Disney and Cocteau's versions of the tale. They're both excellent films in very different ways, so the kids really haven't a lot to lose over seeing both.

Just noticed that the booklets will be slightly different between blu-ray and DVD...
PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film critic Geoffrey O’Brien (Blu-ray edition only), a piece on the film by Cocteau, excerpts from Francis Steegmuller’s 1970 book Cocteau: A Biography, a reprint of Mme. Leprince de Beaumont’s original fable (DVD edition only), and an introduction to Glass’s opera by the composer

That's disappointing, I was hoping the fable would be included with the blu.

Does it have any additional supplements not on the Criterion?

This could also be a possible dual-format upgrade in the future...

The BFI said they have no plans to upgrade their DVD, so unless Criterion do have some plans for a DF upgrade soon, I'll be importing the French disc and ripping the Criterion subs.

It does, but they are not english-friendly, though.

Is the main feature English-friendly?

No, hence my post about ripping subs.

Criterion please release a dual-format upgrade. I would happily double dip for extra supplements & an improved transfer on one of my favorite film in the collection. :)

They've already released it 3 times in the DVD/BD era, I imagine it's unlikely they'll upgrade it anytime soon.

True :(

Although the reason why they've rereleased it so many times could be because they want to have a perfect package, and it obviously continues to be a big seller.

Jeez I hope they focus on things that haven't already had at least one upgrade...

The black levels and contrast are vastly different on the French M6 BD. It's difficult to get a sense of how much shadow detail is intended to be visible - certainly the Criterion renders black as dark grey, so it seems likely that the deeper blacks of the M6, while stifling detail, are more accurate. Caps-a-holic has both up for comparison. In this shot, for example, the French BD loses almost all the background and shifts the focus to just the table and isolated pieces of the fireplace.

It's my main issue preventing me to double dip, because you're loosing a lot of information with what looks like black crush, basically. The picture seems just too dark overall. Yes, what's remaining visible is finer and more detailed, but the caps you linked is highly representative of a problem which is actually impressive. There are just too many things you don't see anymore.

Contrast boosting (on the French release) can give an illusion of things being "finer and more detailed". Out of these two, based on these caps, I prefer the Criterion Blu.

I remember it happening on the Criterion Harakiri release, but I tend to believe that here, the result is finer, but I don't especially like the new color/contrast scheme anyway.

Based on seeing the film in 35mm, I'd say that deep blacks are not accurate for this film. Alekan's photography should be subtle and silvery, not stark and noir-ish.

The new french disc is based on the recent 4K restoration, and BFI is doing a theatrical release. Why would they have no plans to upgrade their DVD?

It would seem a no-brainer for the BFI to release a new Dual Format edition, but this is the Criterion thread and folk are discussing whether Criterion will upgrade their DVD edition, aren't they? It would also seem to be a no-brainer that as soon as Criterion need to repress their new Blu, they'll do a Dual Format edition too.

I should have quoted this post:

I just meant to say an English friendly edition may just be around the corner, as Nick speculated.

I wasn't speculating, the BFI themselves have said they have no plans, after someone asked in light of this new French disc.

Hopefully they're just keeping mum and giving a standard response.

Was the original closing title card replaced for the BD? It looks rather modern.
