Isn't there extremely effective pitch correction now available that would introduce a minimal artifacting? Yes, the tempo would still be off, but that really is unavoidable.

TMDaines wrote:They probably won't. It's not standard practice to pitch correct for these minor frame rate shifts. For Berlin Alexanderplatz, they didn't either.

Virtually no-one can tell the difference between 4% speed up or slow down between PAL/NTSC.
I can sometimes detect the 4% PAL speedup - it just sounds wrong to me. With my DVD collection, I have always aimed to get NTSC versions, even where the PAL image might have the advantage, other things being equal. But I would agree that for many people and for many films, the speedup or slowdown would not be noticed.

The Peter Becker article makes it seem like pitch-correction is problematic. I don't know if I've actually viewed/heard any discs that have had the treatment.

I was in Warsaw for a while at the studio where they had restored the two short films and Przypadek (where I learned some unfortunate things about the history of film restoration in Poland.) I believe the restorations were commissioned by TOR, and Slawomir Idziak had been there to supervise the grading of "KFOZ", as they liked to call it. I asked about the 25fps thing and they didn't know anything about it, so at least these episodes were possibly 24fps originally.

The wording definitely sounds like the entire series will be a new 4K scan with the older restorations of the films completely separate.

Not sure I agree with Criterion about the pitch-correction, isn't pretty much everything with PAL-speedup corrected without much issue? I don't have "golden ears" or anything and I'm not an audiophile (in stark contrast to my extremely videophilic tendencies), but know from experience the speed change without correction can be noticeable if you know the material, particularly with music.

Virtually no PAL sped up films have pitch corrected audio. I know a/some Lord of the Ring(s) releases had pitch corrected audio, but not much else other than that.

My mistake then, sorry. Despite living in a PAL country I don't think I've ever owned more than one or two PAL DVDs (my aforementioned experience with PAL-speedup made me swear it off.) Incidentally even the very first DVD I bought, Tartan UK's edition of Battle Royale, was a rare NTSC version.

I think this is a very interesting article on the work required to conform a 25fps concert film to 24fps. http://www.redsharknews.com/post/item/1 ... d-zeppelin" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Appears to be $23.99 from Family Video. I have no knowledge of or experience with this retailer, but DAMN if they honor orders at that price, whew!

I had made one purchase from them back in 2011. They are like Blockbuster. I have one of their rental stores in my area too. I was able to retrieve my account after I saw your post and placed an order. I am honestly not sure whether they are going to honor this which may be a glitch. Thanks to you anyways. Now I think I can go ahead and place an order for the arrow set

Here is a link to the Family Video listing -- it is no longer available to purchase and currently states "This product is currently unavailable to ship."

As alluded to above, Family Video is one of the few remaining b&m video rental chains. The company buys the land/building that the store is built upon, and has continued to survive by the business of the rental stores' accompanying pizza place/tanning salons/chainwhathaveyou next store. I am by no means a business man, so please excuse my elementary depiction of their business model, but I liken the FV owners to "slumlords," if you will (positive or negative connotation up to the reader).

Anyway, as one may guess by its name, Family Video relies upon its customer service/interaction, so I imagine anyone lucky enough to jump on this pricing error while it was active will be able to get the company to honor it, if it does not do so in the first place.

Bummed to have missed out.

The listing has changed from Decalogue to Dekalog, if that means anything.

Sprung for it too even though I'm coveting the Arrow set. Thanks for the tip!

I'll say this: If they do honor the initial price, they will in all likelihood see more of my business in the future, unlike B&N, for example, with their eBay fiasco a few months ago.

Isn't one of the Ten Commandments something about honoring business deals? heh

Because they have a physical location in your state.

When I checked my order status this morning, it said - "under review". I just checked the status again, and now it says - "In Fulfillment". So, I am guessing that they are going to honor it.

Really? That could be a reason? I was thinking that D50 probably belongs to a state where they don't have sales tax! Off course, I could be wrong.

Yes, that's the law. And they apparently have stores in 20 states.

Actually, under modern interpretation, the obligation to be honest and fair in business dealings falls within the ambit of "Thou shalt not steal". For example:
Promises must be kept and contracts strictly observed to the extent that the commitments made in them are morally just. A significant part of economic and social life depends on the honoring of contracts between physical or moral persons - commercial contracts of purchase or sale, rental or labor contracts. All contracts must be agreed to and executed in good faith. Contracts are subject to commutative justice which regulates exchanges between persons and between institutions in accordance with a strict respect for their rights. Commutative justice obliges strictly; it requires safeguarding property rights, paying debts, and fulfilling obligations freely contracted. Without commutative justice, no other form of justice is possible.

If Family Video can't figure out what caused the price to drop to $23.99 then maybe it should be considered the Lord's work, like the multiplication of the loaves and fishes.
