724 All That Jazz

All That Jazz

Image

The preternaturally gifted director and choreographer Bob Fosse turned the camera on his own life for this madly imaginative, self-excoriating musical masterpiece. Roy Scheider gives the performance of his career as Joe Gideon, whose exhausting work schedule—mounting a Broadway production by day and editing his latest movie at night—and routine of amphetamines, booze, and sex are putting his health at serious risk. Fosse burrows into Gideon's (and his own) mind, rendering his interior world as phantasmagoric spectacle. Assembled with visionary editing that makes dance come alive on-screen as never before, and overflowing with sublime footwork by the likes of Ben Vereen, Leland Palmer, and the awesomely leggy Ann Reinking, All That Jazz pushes the musical genre to personal depths and virtuosic aesthetic heights.

Hope Keith Gordon makes some kind of a contribution. His commentaries/interviews are usually quite informative.

This was a hell of a surprise. A masterpiece in what looks to be a fully loaded set. I'd assumed Fox would do it themselves. I'm especially excited for a Matt Zoller Seitz video essay and chain-smoking Tom Snyder on Tomorrow.

This is one that I'm very surprised to see from Criterion. Odd that Sony didn't release it themselves, but then again, I guess they are doing all that they can to move away from physical media...

Whoops. I thought Sony had the rights to this, but a quick glance seems as though it is Fox.

And if I had any common sense, I would've seen Jeff's comment above mine:

A great film, and interestingly actually a musical drama structured round the 5 stages of grief when faced with impending death or the death or loss of someone or something significant, formulated in 1969 by the psychiatrist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross... They being...

1. DENIAL
2. ANGER
3. BARGAINING
4. DEPRESSION
5. ACCEPTANCE

The "More" has been revealed:

• New conversation between actors Ann Reinking and Erzsebet Foldi

------In the process the following was removed:
• Razzle-Dazzle, a new video essay on the film by critic Matt Zoller Seitz

Odd that they dropped the video essay. I'm guessing somebody wasn't happy with it being on the disc. Still, looks to be an impressive package of supplements.
