Damn, why now with all of these late to the party films?

Re: 200 The Honeymoon Killers
I reviewed them because Gary never did, and I felt like doing so. There's nothing more to it. In the past year, I did the same with a bunch of older AE and BFI discs as well. More to come, btw.knives wrote:Damn, why now with all of these late to the party films?

Re: 200 The Honeymoon Killers
I hate to rag even a little on this disc, but I don't think it's accurate to say the soundtrack is "clear". Honeymoon Killers is a terribly muffled and tinny sounding film and I usually need the subtitles on to discern what anyone's saying. It's not Criterion's fault (I asked about it and they replied that there was nothing to be done about it), but I think the review is a little misleading there nonetheless (I also notice that it's the same cut-and-pasted wording from the other reviews in this batch...).

I actually like it when Beaver (or Gary's chums) review an old DVD. It helps keep such titles in our consciousness. And it's always good to have more CC titles reviewed with screencaps somewhere for reference.

Re: 200 The Honeymoon Killers
To posted on my Beaver review:
Well folks, I goofed. Shortly after Gary posted my reviews for these five Criterions, I began receiving notification that the pictures were not representative of the video quality of the releases. Although I initially defended my captures, I recently realized that when I took the screen captures, the software that I use to do this was incorrectly configured. Fortunately these are the only reviews of mine that were affected. I will redo the captures as soon as possible, but since they are currently in storage roughly 300 miles away from me, it will likely take a week or two before I can get that done. I apologize for the difficulty and I assure you that I will take every step in the future to ensure that this won’t happen again. I’ll end by reiterating for those who are considering purchasing these discs, THE IMAGE ON THE DISCS LOOKS BETTER THAN WHAT IS CURRENTLY DISPLAYED.

Re: 200 The Honeymoon Killers
If anyone watches the show Cold Case, the episode Lonely Hearts was based on Martha and Ray, though much more fictionalized and in the 1980s ("ripped from the headlines" is probably the proper term). Not nearly as good as this film of course, but worth checking out if you like the show or similar ones.
Everyone's pretty much said everything I would (positive that is, two thumbs way up from me) about the film so I'll add: Doris Roberts is in this!

Director Leonard Kastle 1929-2011. "Kastle, whose first film was destined to be his last, died May 18 at his home in Westerlo, N.Y., after a brief illness, said Tina Sisson, a friend. He was 82".

There was a theory on the net that Shirley Stoler was former model Shirley Kilpatrick, who in 1957 played THE ASTOUNDING SHE-MONSTER!!!

Jan Troell approved The Honeymoon Killers release. I don't see what's the issue here...

Oh dear, I was thinking the error was that the new 4k restoration had been approved by Kastle even though he's been dead for over four years.

I don't know, David Maysles died twenty to thirty years ago and Criterion still put his name and signature on director approved stickers.

Re: 200 The Honeymoon Killers
It could have a logic in these cases, because Criterion is sometimes using HD masters old enough to have been approved by these persons when they were still around. The same goes with some Bergman movies for instance (like Smiles of a Summer Night : Bergman died in 2007 but the HD master was approved for the DVD which was released in 2004).CSM126 wrote:I don't know, David Maysles died twenty to thirty years ago and Criterion still put his name and signature on director approved stickers.
Interestingly enough however, for both Grey Gardens and Gimme Shelter, only Albert is quoted as having supervised the restorations, never David.
But in the case of The Honeymoon Killers, it is a new 4K resto, so the same logic can't apply there.
